Pheu Thai calls for end to prosecution of protesters

Pheu Thai Party on Wednesday called on authorities to stop prosecuting participants of recent assemblies against the ruling junta government.
 

It has also called for the junta to revoke its ban against political gatherings of five or more people - an order that has stopped all political parties from making official moves since soon after the 2014 coup.

 

Action has recently been taken against people joining the “We Walk” march, starting on January 20, to call for more public participation in the decision-making process on community issues, and of those joining the “MBK 39” protest on January 27, calling for the much-delayed election to happen.

 

Participants in these and other events face charges of breaking the junta ban against political gathering. Some were also accused of allegedly committing sedition and breaking the public assembly act.

 

“Given that the government and the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) do not keep promises and have a tendency to stay longer in power, people have every right to doubt them and call for their deprived rights and freedom,” the party said in a statement.

 

Rights and freedom of expression and peaceful assembly are also endorsed in Article 34 and 44 of the constitution, it went on.

 

“We don’t see how these assemblies contain violence or use of arms,” the party went on. “The charges are too severe and very unfair.”

 

It said prosecuting protesters would definitely affect the NCPO’s attempts to build reconciliation.

 

The party also urged the junta government to clearly declare the election date.

 

“It should also stop using conflicts as excuse to stay in power,” it added. “Different opinions are natural in a democratic society and should not be considered as conflicts.”

It seems one junta after another just keeps playing into the hands of those who favor red.  It is just Thai history repeating itself over and over again.   The less than nimble minds running the country has given them free passage on the high road and probably another victory at the polls.  People keep saying there are no decent politicians.  What decent person wants to have to deal with the junta ?

PTP won't win any election in the near future and by the way what's the point of winning an election if the criminals(junta)reserves half of the seats in a new government.As long the junta,elite and royalists  are not in prison as long Thailand will suffer

But whatever, whoever, Pheu Thai will never be anything like a decent political party and only want a better future for their boss and themselves.

Symbolically a win against a stacked deck will effect the whole country.  People might start to question their government.  The lower echelons in government service, that are not part of an under the table rewards system, may start to question their superiors, if they are not doing so already.   If the unjust go unchallenged or unpunished, they will do as they please.  Another upset like the one Abhisit suffered will make Thailand's elites look incredibly foolish.  A loss of face that will resonate for years.

How you define a decent party. You think any party here qualify under your definition of 'decent'.

Ask any Thai outside of BKK and the deep South about the good old days, early to mid 2000's.

To a man (woman) they'll tell you how they hark back to the good old days...

He absolutely is - but then again what politician isn't - I would guess most politicians are highly ambitious people who seek power,  control and a legacy. That is the nature of the beast unfortunately and its attracts like for like. There are very few people who enter politics on truly altruistic grounds.

Your dislike is understandable, but the junta and the inept civil service are doing all the work for him.   As bad as he was, he did not have ultimate power and he was elected fairly.  The same cannot be said in the next or all future elections with junta appointed MP's.  The junta has aligned Mr.T with the average Thai who wants an election.  He is most likely involved in some way, but how bad is that given he state of things?

I would hope that Taksin is consigned to the history books in the same way coups would be.  If the only choice the electorate have  is between military coups following the re-election of Taksin (under the guise of puppet party, it's a poor choice, with little hope for change or progress.

 

Political change is overdue - but it's just the same old dinosaurs being wheeled out spouting the same old junk, time and time again. A perfect way to disenfranchise in order to keep the young, progressive and inspiring people out of the political machine and maintain the  status quo

Jeez..the hypocrisy of Pheu Thai...was the bombing and shooting of protestors by order from their last deputy PM cum scum bag a better solution.

You mean is a noisy/messy/occasionally violent democracy a better solution than a military d junta? 

I think the answer to that after almost 4 years (and no end in sight) of the current toads is a resounding YES.
