'Many rich people' poaching illegally despite better enforcement

The construction company tycoon arrested recently on charges of poaching in a wildlife sanctuary is not the only millionaire who enjoyed an “adventurous lifestyle” including hunting wild animals, a source in the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry said on Wednesday.

In the past few years, many groups of rich people have reportedly sneaked into protected forests – with the help of officials – and hunted wild animals.

However, the numbers had decreased as authorities intensified their enforcement of conservation laws, although some people still conducted illegal activities, the source said on condition of anonymity.

The source said groups of rich people preferred to hunt along the border in Kanchanaburi province and in Kangkrajarn National Park in Phetchburi province.

Some groups of hunters also posted photos of dead animals on their Facebook pages.

“Officials have made their best efforts to take legal action against [illegal hunters],” the source said.

Given the stricter regulations relating to wildlife sanctuaries, he could not believe that Italian-Thai Development company president Premchai Karnasuta and his group would dare to hunt in the area.

He added that the group had been granted permission to enter the wildlife sanctuary “to study the nature”.

One of Premchai’s friends reportedly asked a former high-ranking official in the Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry to talk to a current senior official in the Natural Resources, Wildlife and Plants Ministry to facilitate the trip.

As the group were guests of senior officials, junior officials at the entrance of the wildlife sanctuary let their car enter the compound without it being searched.

The source added that when forest rangers raided an area near Premchai’s campsite early Monday after hearing gunshots, they found his subordinate before finding the company executive nearby.

Given those circumstances, the source said he believed it might be difficult to charge Premchai with hunting.

Junta rich people, poaching legally with no enforcement

Shows nicely how the rich and powerful see the country: as their private playground where they can do whatever they want.

Its bad to use all your wealth and connection to get out of an accident (girl killing a van full of medical doctors and students, red-bull a**hole killing a cop, etc), but it is a new level of entitlement to knowingly break laws for your own pleasure.

Sickening.

How to ignore the law in Thailand - bribery.  How else do Pattaya meterless taxi-drivers evade police attention?

There is no law when it can be sold and you can afford to buy it.

The rich who have hotels along the rivers in kanchanaburi have to listen to those partyfloats (with VERY loud music) all night long.....Those rafts can do what they want and their customers as well.

Same as the longtailboats/jetski's who can make MUCH noise right in front of expensive rivercondo's/resorts as there is no rules for that it seems.

Many poor people also!

Theres no enforcement of any type. End of story. This is a one off.

ENFORCEMENT . . . Thai authorities don't know the meaning of the word. Too easy to look the other way, especially since those at the top of the responsibility ladder employ the same management maxim.

Many rich generals governing despite being nominally a democracy.

What has the word "Junta" or the idea behind it, to do with this case?

Rich people, Sir, because of being rich, exert power.

Money is the greatest facilitator in the world, and nearly everybody has his/her price.

Anywhere in the world.

Got nothing to to do with the military led government, in fact, all of a sudden things are possibly changing.

Take Red Bull Boss as just one example.

Sounds similar to the one where Japan can only hunt whales for scientific research.

Both excuses a joke!

And not much different anywhere else in the world unfortunately.  Money and power always talks.

Or Teddy Kennedy,Bill Clinton or Jimmy Saville as other examples.

Money and power,  money and power everytime.

Some places it is more obvious due to the culture but essentially it is the human way.

Yes, but lawfully its right (it does not feel right at all). But if you find one guy sitting and hear shots from an other direction you can't prove the guy was hunting. Maybe that fingerprints on a gun are evidence, but then you can say he carried it. I think for poaching you have to catch them in the act. I wish it were differently that you could just charge them for it because they had the animals.

Guilty by association I'd  say.
