BANGKOK, 15th February 2018 (NNT)-Major markets in several provinces across Thailand have been bustling with Thais of Chinese descent coming to buy religious items.

On Wednesday in Bangkok, many Chinese-Thai people could be seen along Yaowarat Rd looking for food and religious items required for a Chinese New Year ceremony.

Prices of most products have increased only slightly ahead of the festival. Chinese qipao dresses have also become more popular among women who buy them to wear on the festive occasion. The traditional Chinese dresses cost between 300-800 baht.

In addition to religious items, many people visited a sign shop on Charoen Krung 14 to purchase banners bearing Chinese characters for good luck. One banner can cost 100 baht depending on the size of the Chinese characters.

In Chachoengsao province, prices of fresh food and religious items sold at Bo Bua Market remain the same as before the festival. Price tags are also clearly visible which makes it easier for shoppers to make a decision. More people reportedly visited the market this year.

In Trat province, boiled chicken, duck and pork were selling well in Wang Krajae sub-district as more Chinese-Thai residents continued to look for Chinese New Year items all day on Wednesday.

The atmosphere was also similar in Bueng Kan province where Thais of Chinese descent also needed to buy the same food and religious items to celebrate Chinese New Year.

Thai citizens of Chinese descent in the kingdom celebrated the coming Chinese New Year today by worshipping their ancestors and praying for blessings for their families at their homes, Chinese temples and shrines.

The custom of worshiping ancestors started since Wednesday night, or New Year’s Eve, and followed by a reunion dinner at homes today.

On New Year’s Day, some families worship in memorial temples, where they place tributes to ancestors and set off firecrackers.

Highlight of this year celebration will be in Phuket and Bangkok.
