EC confirms readiness to organize general election

BANGKOK, 28th February 2018 (NNT) - The Election Commission has confirmed its readiness to organize a general poll despite the legislature’s recent rejection of the finalists applying to join the commission.

EC President Supachai Somchaoren said on Tuesday that a decision by election commissioner Somchai Srisutthiyakorn to apply for the position of the EC secretary-general does not necessarily mean he has an advantage over the candidates as the selection process will be based on the discretion of the commission and the knowledge and the ability of all who are vying for the post.

Mr. Supachai also declined to confirm if he will vote for Mr. Somchai while giving an assurance that the commission will still be able to work even though Mr. Somchai’s resignation will leave the team with only four members.

He stated that the current Constitution stipulates that the existing commission will have to function and serve the office until the new team is selected.

Meanwhile, Mr. Somchai said that the EC will hold a meeting with representatives of all political parties on March 28 to help them overcome all pending administrative hurdles as called for by the new law on political parties.
