BANGKOK, 6th March 2018 (NNT) – The government has asked the Law Reform Commission of Thailand to be ready to expedite adaptation of any laws needed to accommodate the new constitution.

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Kreau-ngam, in a special lecture entitled “Law Reform: A Turning Point for Thailand” given at the 63rd anniversary of the Thai Journalists’ Association, explained that Thailand currently uses close to 20,000 new and long existing laws with 300 legislated by this government alone. He remarked however, that the quality of the laws is more important than their quantity and that the government is focusing on their objectives, social changes, personnel for changes and public benefit.

The Deputy Prime Minister said today that as Thailand has many archaic and now irrelevant laws still in use, it is important that it reform them so that they better fit with modern values such as those pertaining to human rights, the new constitution and international relations. He asserted that Thailand needs stronger laws against corruption, to support competitiveness, to address modern issues and laws that can be better enforced.

Wissanu suggested the government establish another branch of the Law Reform Commission so that it may immediately adapt laws as needed.
