Impossible for Thai police and other ministry to take rape seriously?

I travelled to AoNang (Krabi) many times every year, first time in December 2011, after first time I believed AoNang was my paradise on Earth! I loved the area and I was stupid enough to believe this place was safe... Because I never read Thai news (before now) and when we stayed in AoNang me and my family enjoyed time with local friends, visit local temples, practice yoga and meditate, not at least helping homeless animals with medical treatment if they needed, sterilised cats and dogs for reducing the number of homeless animals in future. We never party in nightclubs or stayed out in late evenings/nights... (I agree, it sounds little bit boring to spend time like this in Thailand but I loved it and I need much restitution/recovery because sickness) ...what I try to say is when not read/listen to news, never stays out late night, don’t know or watch all the crazy things that happen around you  it’s more easy to “loose your mind” and forget you stay in a corrupt country with almost no justice for victims!

I will NOT say ‘if I knew all the things I know about AoNang- Krabi now, I wouldn’t let my 19 year old daughter go to <name of bar removed> Bar alone with 3 friends’...because probably I think the same way many people do after 14 long holidays in exactly same area and nothing bad happen to you or some people you know... “this only happen to other people, not me or my family!” I know my self... learning the hard way because I’m almost blind and believe(d) most people I meet is harmless.

But what happened to my daughter is not about being blind, stupid, drunk, how she was dressed etc. It’s only about extremely bad luck because all she did was ask the bartender how to find the toilet... he followed her downstairs, he open a door, he pushed her to a bed behind the door, he pull her pants off and he raped her!

When rapist is ‘finish’ he stop holding her fast and she run upstairs, continue run outside, down the road and she phoned me... crying and screaming in panic, only words I understand is “moooooom, come to the road outside BlueHotel!!!» Around 50 minutes earlier I looked into her happy eyes and I told her to enjoy time with her friends and now she shaking, screaming and she can’t breathe normally... Police take us to Krabi hospital, she get medical treatment and dna tests from sperm, we stayed 4-5 hours in hospital before we take taxi back to hotel in AoNang. My husband and my 27 year old daughter begging us to come home to Norway same evening...  after I called and told what happened they both start searching internet and they read other rape-stories and my husband wanne book flight and begging please take this flight home! In same time many many police officers come to the hotel we stayed in and I started think maybe the police care about us for real... we go with them to Krabi Police station for report perpetrator. Police told us to sign report texted in Thai, I feel not okay to do because the translator many times use google for translation Thai-English and I asked police officer if my local friend (she waiting outside) please can read report before we sign... she answer me “can not madam, secret documents” I feel not safe if we sign... in same way I feel not shoure police not start being angry if we not sign, so we both signed. Crazy to do?!? -yes, I know...

Police arrests the rapist same day and next day the police told us we can feel 100% safe because rapist will not be bailed out... and they told us police closed <name of bar removed> Bar because more safe for us! Bullshit, after police closed Bar the staff start coming to hotel we stayed in and threatened us. The staff from Bar and friends of staff threaten and followed us for 2 days, we feel very unsafe and some other people told us the owner at Bar + owner at hotel we stayed in was mafia tougher and that they pay money to police for continue to criminal things in AoNang- Krabi... 100% panics in our minds so we changed hotel this night, my husband booked flight and we escaped from Thailand 5 am 14th February.

The police told us the rapist not bailed out but HE BAILED OUT AFTER 1 DAY in jail, how can the police lie about this??? Why do the police pretending they care and almost all they say is lies?!? I’m shoure police believe the tourist-victims not will find out and they believe no other tourist will get the true story about how they practice corruption and lies in cases like this! After I come back to Norway I read so many stories about rape in Thailand and many times the police punish the victims... police and other in ministry means the victim is to drunk and should understand that when females is drunk they ask for get raped... if females wearing shorts in Bar they ask for get raped, if females is alone outside hotel/home after midnight they ask for get raped etc. This make me so ANGRY!!! Please help me find a way for make them understand it’s NOT the victims that do something wrong! Help me fight for more justice in future... if only way for victims to feel justice is to let the world know the truth about how police protect the rapist and blame the victims, share all stories you read!

I've removed the name of the bar and images of the alleged perpetrator.

Thailand has draconian libel and defamation laws so we don't permit name-and-shame threads. This rule is protect Thaivisa (of course) and our members.

Sorry.

The libel and defamation laws, are indeed draconian, however naming and shaming is sometimes the only way to protect TVF members !!

I agree, and rape is a horrific crime, but getting Thaivisa closed down or blocked isn't in our member's interests either. Rock and a hard place I'm afraid

If anyone can find this story in credible local or international media (any language) please let us know, we can often publish on a "they published first" basis.

Most probably this case is being brushed under the carpet like many others before and after it. The perp has probably done this to other victims too. If OP wants to see justice, this case needs attention in social media. It won't happen unless the matter is pursued by/through high-profile sources with adequate "uproar" in Thailand and victims home country.

Took a quick Google search for the story in the Thai language press but nothing turned up yet.
Reminds me of the story of the Dutch girl who was raped there in 2012.
Have been several other tourist rapes and attempted rapes over the years there too. The most recent being an attempted rape of a Chinese tourist on 15th February of this year.

Thanks for support and yours understanding!

We will publish in newspapers this weekend, I already post 1 video at YouTube and at my Facebook... if you guys will help me publishing please share from my Facebook: Anca Håkestad or IHANA I Helped AoNang Animals

The Norwegian embassy know about this but the only thing they help with is send me a list with lawyers in Thailand and in this list they also write that the embassy take no responsibility for any of this lawyers... feel safe to put money on a local lawyer in a corrupt place like this?!? No way!

the only winner would be the lawyer because he/she can handle to make police or us pay more and more... I will not gamble my money into that.

The embassy also contacted Krabi Police for get updates in case and ask for copies from the paper we signed...

Sorry to hear of your Daughters plite. Sadly The Thai police don’t really think Abuse of women is a serious offence.Thai men are brought up to think women are second class. Even male children talk to their mothers like they are dirt . The farther usually never reprimands them. Hope your daughter can move on with her life. If I was in your position I do not know how I would react. But I would probly make my life’s mission to see the guy have a bad accident.
