webfact
Thai netizens wowed as Frenchman washes mum and dad's feet, ordained into monkhood video screenshot Forty five thousand people shared a post of a French man being ordained into the monkhood at the weekend. A video of the ordination appeared on Facebook on the page of "Chomrom Rak Muang Lom" (association of people who love Lomsak, a north eastern Thai town). The video showed Pierre Prouteau presenting flowers in a phan thong (golden tray) to his parents who are also foreign nationals. He then washes their feet ceremonially before being shaved then doused in scented holy water by the assembled gathering of Buddhists. He is then dressed in white as he rejoins his parents for more respectful gestures. According to poster Acom Doagputta the ordination took place on Saturday at Wat Ban Pak Duk in Lomsak. Acom said that Pierre thoroughly respects and loves the customs and conventions of Thai culture. Posters on Facebook praised Pierre and his family for respecting Thai traditions with resounding choruses of 'sathu' (amen). Dararasmi
Tempted to write something about French people bathing being newsworthy in itself, but that would be horrible and playing into an untrue stereotype. 1

What a shame he confuses religion with customs and culture, none of the stuff in the video has anything to do with being Thai, and all to do with being Buddhist.

Hardie
It happens quite frequently, actually, though maybe not in Lomsak, just doesn't always get You-tubed for mass consumption. There is an entire temple dedicated to just those foreign devotees near Ubon, quite famously in Ajahn Cha's Forest Tradition, Wat Pa Nanachat (or something like that, not sure of the transliterations)...
