Security tight at Government House, though Prayut has his fans

Security was tightened at Government House on Tuesday as demonstrators – who are demanding that an election be held sooner than planned – vowed to march there.

 

Today (May 22) is the fourth anniversary of the National Council for Peace and Order, the military junta that overthrew the elected Yingluck Shinawatra government in 2014 and remains in power.

 

Led by the Democracy Restoration Group, the hundreds-strong assembly of demonstrators planned to march from Thammasat University’s Tha Prachan campus to Government House to call for an election this year rather than in February as planned. They also want the junta to step down.

 

Police barricades outside the campus held them in place, at least temporarily.

 

Deputy Police Commissioner Pol Gen Srivara Ransibrahmanakul and Deputy Commissioner of Tourist Police Pol Maj Gen Surachet Hakpan were monitoring the security situation.

 

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, after taking his normal route to work, enjoyed a morning by meeting with actors from a pro-military TV series and had his picture taken with singer Pakorn Lam.

 

Asked how he would “take care” of the pro-election assembly, Prayut succinctly replied that he would “take care of the press first”.

Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha dispensed advice at a meet-and-greet Tuesday morning with actors from “Nai Roi Soi Dao: Soi Dao Ma Roi Baa” (Cadet Who Aims For the Stars: Putting Stars on My Shoulders), a low-rated lakorncurrently airing on army-run Channel 5 that he also hasn’t watched.

Around 100 protestors broke off to set up another group at UN HQ & will continue marching towards gov house - 14:30 - Police has set up a new barricade at Makkhawan Rangsan Bridge while about 300 are still trap at Thammasat University.

And how many of those actors would have dared to refuse to go to such an event arranged by the studio/production house/ etc. Could mean the end of their career.

After learning that their fellow activists were arrested at Makkawanrangsan bridge, protest leaders at Thammasat proposed to turn themselves in to police in return for police to let other protesters go home or follow them to police station.

Thank you for this update, Wilsonandson. As I predicted this morning, today's event has not turned out to be the huge challenge to junta power that some had expected. The numbers are simply way too small and the fury of the people simply not present in sufficient strength. It is possible that next year, when the February 'election' is again postponed (which it certainly will be - many of us have no doubt about that), the ire of the Thai people may go up a notch or two and protesting crowds might grow. But I cannot see the numbers approaching half a million people or anything like that (which it needs to be). As I and some other posters keep saying: we simply don't see  that raging fury, incandescent sense of outrage amongst large sections of the Thai people that would precipitate a genuine mass rebellion against the junta forces. Being merely disgruntled or 'fed up' with the junta (as I suspect most Thais are) is nowhere near adequate a response to the magnitude of the theft of a whole nation's freedom, rights and sovereignty.

 

On another aspect: it is so sickening to see the police with their Alsatian dogs outside Thammasat University, waiting to physically attack human beings who are simply asking for the Leader's own promise of a November 2018 election to be honoured. How can Thai policemen and policewomen who partake in this disgrace live with themselves and sleep at night? But then - I am talking about Thai 'police' - who have nothing to do with genuine police work and with serving the public at all.

 

It's all so very sad and disheartening.

Last I heard he'd moved to Venezuela and was recently spotted posting pro-Maduro comments with bouncing emojis on the Caracas Post Online. 

It's infuriating - really makes one's blood boil - to see the peaceful demonstrators (whose leaders have now been arrested and spirited off by the 'police' to who knows where) hemmed in by more police (as it seems) than actual demonstrators themselves. Look at this from Youtube. Shameful:

The Thai Police are in a no win situation damed if they do damed if they dont ! The junta still set the rules

Wouldn't even meet protesters to bring Happiness Back to the People !
