NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, 4 June 2018 (NNT) – The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) plans to propose its dual-track rail system and electricity-powered train project in the South to the cabinet for approval this October.

The Director of the SRT's Region 4 Operation Center, Banharn Kobayang, said the SRT has designed plan for the development of the dual track railway and electric train in the southern provinces to accommodate cargo transport between Thailand and Malaysia.

He said electric trains from Malaysia can operate only up to Padang Besar station as the track facilities in Thailand have yet to be electrified. This has caused a gap in logistics network which could benefit from the train services from the Container Yard in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, and from Hat Yai district in Songkhla province to Padang Besar port in Malaysia.

The five billion baht electric train project has now been submitted to the Ministry of Transport for consideration. If approved, the project will be forwarded to the Cabinet for final approval in October 2018.

The SRT official added that the SRT is working to continuously to improve rail services through the improvement of facilities and passengers services. The dual-track railway and high-speed railway projects are now in place to help develop public transportation infrastructure.

Hmm, if this goes ahead do I detect an overhead cable reclamation project might be initiated by the criminal fraternity?

I'd guess initially there would be the usual 'dead-loss' attempts, like the guy in Chonburi a few years back who was found dead at the foot of an electric power pole with a set of metal bolt-cutters next to him.

Oh yes!

What a splendid idea.

Make it easy for the "insurgents" to stop trains running for lack of juice.

Double tracks, very good idea!

Electric "washing lines" not a good idea.

Changing a locomotive can be done in around 10 minutes.

Not a real hurdle, a train needs to be inspected before admission to the network anyway.

Yes, Malaysia completed its upgrade of the line a couple of years back, all dual track and full electrification.

Just upgrading the Thai side to dual track would be a start!  Save the laying up in a siding whilst waiting for the other train to pass.
