June 18, 20188 yr Meechai denies charter rigged to forge ‘unity govt’ By THE NATION Meechai Ruchupan THE CHIEF Constitution drafter yesterday dismissed claims that the charter was written with a goal of paving the way for a government of “national unity” after the next general election. Meechai Ruchupan, chairman of the Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC), said the new Constitution, in effect since April last year, was based on suggestions from public members. Critics have said no single political party is likely to win a majority in the House of Representatives in the next election, making a coalition government possible. Critics said the lack of a clear winner could also lead to certain parties colluding to select Prayut Chan-o-cha as the prime minister after the poll. In response, Meechai yesterday said the claims were based on speculation. He said nobody could predict how voters would decide the next election. “You can’t plot such a plan that is speculated,” Meechai said. “Nobody can read the minds of voters. Time changes, so do the factors that make voters choose their MPs,” he added. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan commented on the call for a government of national unity made by Anek Laothamatas, a key figure in the Action Coalition for Thailand Party. Prawit said all the political parties would have to cooperate to make such an administration possible. But he was unsure if that would be possible. “I don’t know how it will happen,” he said. In response to Anek’s proposal for an amnesty to solve the political conflict, Prawit said that should be a matter for the new government after the next election. “It can be done. But it’s a matter for an elected government,” he said. However, Prawit added that he was unsure if an amnesty would actually lead to a reconciliation or end the conflict. Meechai also suggested that the Election Commission issue a calendar with exact dates and timeframes to prepare for the next election. The CDC chief was speaking at Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Law, where he gave a speech about the new Constitution. In his speech, held to mark the 45th anniversary of the faculty’s establishment, Meechai called on people who want to amend the Constitution to do so for the benefit of the public. He said the charter was written with that principle in mind. The constitution drafters “are aware of the significance of the administration and of all state organs performing their duties in line with the laws and the Constitution. [The administration and organs] shall not act as they like, but they shall act for the benefit and happiness of the people as a whole,” he said. 'suggestions from public members' ? true if you consider that he and his cronies are members of the public and self-appointed representatives of everyone else
June 18, 20188 yr That photo does him absolutely no justice. Then again, what photo does . . . . . . . ?
June 18, 20188 yr Popular Post It is so sickening to read words from this creep where he talks about 'the next elected government', when he knows full well that the next 'government' will be (as per all plans and arrangements) Prayut and/or his mob (fairly 'elected' does not, of course, even enter into it). I don't know about you, but I really begin to tire of all this empty verbiage by these democracy thieves. Every single word that comes out of their ugly mouths is a lie or, at best, a dissembling and twisting of the truth.

June 19, 20188 yr Popular Post 'Meechai ... said the new Constitution, in effect since April last year, was based on suggestions from public members.' Oh yes, of course: that was the 'Constitution' that no one was allowed to say anything negative about in public, on pain of 10 years' imprisonment. Oh yes, the whole 'Constitution' certainly came from 'suggestions' from the public!
June 19, 20188 yr Meechai denies charter rigged to forge ‘unity govt’ Of course he does... Obviously. Edited June 19, 20188 yr by KiwiKiwi

Wasn't it only last week that they threatened the leader of one of the new political parties who had said that the first thing he was going to do (if elected) was change the constitution? In my opinion, there is no lie he will not tell. nor depth to which he will not stoop to enforce his own bleak view of what the Thai world should look like. It's his life's work and he should not be underestimated on the mediaeval scale of usefulness. He has the ear of many neanderthals and assorted knuckle-draggers.
June 19, 20188 yr You can't fix the future. Meechai should know this fundamental truth. He's old enough. You can set guidelines, that's about it.
June 19, 20188 yr Popular Post His thinking and views are so rightist that the 1997 charter drafters left him out of the committee for good reasons. The 1997 charter was called people charter because it incorporate elected representatives from each provinces to the drafting committee of 99 members. Meechai’s charter has 36 members; all appointees by the junta. How on earth are the suggestions from the public represented in the drafting and what benefits for the people if their views are not being heard and represented. Expletives.......

Given the mediocre status of the world, most are probably casually observing, as you rightly put it. In the end, Thailand is little more than a decaying tourist spot that is adrift. It is doubtful tho that Reuters or some of the other serious news outlets that follow Thailand will allow the charade go unreported. Still, who cares other than those on this forum ?
June 19, 20188 yr Why doesn't he just advocate the restoring of the 1997 constitution as that's the best one they have ever had? So many traitors here that should be detained in jail it's crazy.
