The Tourism Authority of Thailand wants to establish a new agency to oversee tourist safety that could give orders to other government bodies.

TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn said on Tuesday he would make the proposal to the national tourism policy board at its August 2 meeting.

He suggested it be named the Safety and Security Tourism Thailand Office and be in charge of raising standards to match the best international standards.

Yuthasak wants the agency to have authority over other government entities such as the Harbour Department and Tourist Police Bureau.

He planned to ask the policy board to consider ways to prevent more tragic incidents and how to accelerate compensation payments after mishaps.

But would anyone here know how to do that, let alone give a rats a$$ ?

That just about $um$ it up, throw more money at the tourists with the few $'s they usually payout, about 10% of what it would cost to bury someone back home

It would be great if something like this could be implemented, however I highly doubt it.

Have they put this out to tender yet? It's been suggested before as the answer to all tourist safety issues. There's an even more fashionable wrist bracelet tourists will be fighting over to wear.

Ain't going to happen here in Thailand for sure...

No Thai government agency/department is going to put up with/accept taking mandatory orders from some other department, especially one related to tourism.

Yes, they're great at TALKING about doing things to protect tourist safety -- after another bunch have died lately.  But when push comes to shove, they're all about their own interests, making money, brown envelopes, playing FB on their phones, frittering the days away, etc...

Actually enforcing the laws and regulations is a mere inconvenient nuisance.

Accuracy in naming the agency would require it to be called the Tourism Safety Tea Money and Bribery Collection Agency.  Just another money grab from an industry that is seen as highly lucrative and with heavy foreign ownership/investment.

I feel safer already ?

...and these TAT guys get paid for this?

I reckon it must be on a commission basis - that's why they come up with so many ideas that seem to get slated. If there's one that works, then they're quids in.

Is it 1st of April again?

Excellent idea!  Start a new agency, which will create more jobs for even more couch potatoes to do SFA!

I don't know how these guys sleep at night!

hey already have an ASGENCY dealing with Tourist safety...it is called the ROYAL THAI POLICE , now if they did their job correctly more wasted money on jobs for useless people would be saved .

Spelling mistake

Since tourist police busy doing all the raiding , new agency is needed .

makes perfect sense

I take it that their is nobody in charge of tourists safety at the moment then !!!

strange for a country with such a large ( and growing ) tourist industry.

Couldn't agree more, and IMHO the main thing needed is a complete change of attitude by Thai society to all aspects of safety.

And iMHO the main factor needed to make that happen is highly credible leadership that people see as credible and valuable and will automatically / willingly follow what that leader suggests and pushes.

Other countries with large tourism industries don't have specific tourist safety departments; tourism businesses are subject to the same health and safety rules as other businesses and the big difference is that they are enforced!

They don't, they sleep at their desk all day.?

It's all so cynical. They just want the visitors $ and couldn't care less about anything else...come here, risk your life, spend your money then leave as we are not interested in anything any further than that. However, judging by the tsunami of Chinese migrants that have swamped Laos after the rail and business deals they have made, then get ready for even larger amounts of this lot swamping Thailand soon...especially once the rail links through Thailand are agreed. Going to be even more scary in 10 years time than it is now.

Another agency of get paid for doing nothing...

just more in-active positions for those who do bugger-all all day

Ah the sstto as it will be called or sshitto for short.i wonder if they've built the room for inactive posts before opening this new department of sshitto.
