Banteay Meanchey Provincial Court yesterday charged a Thai national who allegedly stole five luxury phones from a vendor so that he could pawn them to gamble in Poipet city along the Thai border. Major Nuon Vichete, a provincial police officer, identified the accused as Yang Chhongkao, 60, a gambling addict from Thailand’s Chiang Mai province. He was charged with theft and is now in prison pending trial.

Maj Vichete said that according to a police report, the accused on Thursday morning went to a phone shop owned by the victim Niek Sochenda in the city. He said the accused pretended that he wanted to buy a phone, but snatched the five phones when the victim was busy attending to another customer.

Maj Vichete said that the next morning the accused went to sell the phone to another shop in the city but the owner became suspicious and informed police who went there to arrest him. Police confiscated the phones and returned them to Mr Sochenda. “During his interrogation, the accused admitted to the crime, saying that he lost money gambling in a casino,” Maj Vichete said. “He said that he stole the phones so that he could sell them and gamble more.”
