The user-friendly public toilet prototypes from the Department of Tourism (DOT) attracted considerable interest from tourism businesses at the recent Thailand Social Expo 2018.

The DOT successfully showcased the prototypes of its user-friendly public toilets at the Tourism and Sports for All Exhibition, held as part of the recent Thailand Social Expo 2018 organized by the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, said Anan Wongbenjarat, the DOT’s director general.

The DOT also hosted the exhibition “The Touch of Happiness, The Experiences of Thai Ways: Sustainable Tourism” at the Thailand Social Expo 2018.

“It’s the DOT’s mandate under Weerasak Kowsurat, the Tourism and Sports Minister, to develop tourism infrastructure to serve the visitors of all age groups, genders, and people with physical challenges,” Anan said.

The DOT, he added has been working closely with the Department of Public Works and Town and Country Planning, to develop different prototypes of user-friendly public toilets and make them available for free so the tourism communities and general business concerns can readily use the designs or adapt them to serve their visitors without having to shoulder the design costs themselves.

At present, there are three prototypes of user-friendly public toilets -- for men, women, and the disabled. Construction costs range from Bt2.1 million to Bt4.3 million.

Nice of them to think to put flood-level markings on the walls  . . . .  ?

... I have learned about toilets like this 30 years ago in University.

They are standard in Europe for at least 35 years.

Id' say the usual measurements in public toilets, read stalls at gas stations, are about 100x80cm, with a squatter that's so close to the back wall there's no way to rinse your arse.

But do they have the short time/ long time user friendly option?

What on earth were you studying at University?

For you first timers to LOS, note that I carry a small vial of essential oil, such as Eucalyptus, everywhere.....for those unexpected dookies in obscure market squatters that are a mere hole uncleaned since it was dug, the air resplendent with the aged aromas of market offal besides, a drop in each nostril and on the womb broom makes it so much easier as opposed to a hold breath dump and run......

Do they have solid gold plumbing and bum guns that spray only Evian water?

That's what the poysians are for. Stick one in each nostril. If it's a Dark Corners of Hades type scenario, as it often is, screw off the bottom of the poysian, place the bottom part upside down on on top and shake the oil inside to the nose piece just before stuffing them in for maximum effect. The excruciating pain will mask the stench.

A 3 bed house costs less to build than that toilet. No wonder he has such a grin on his face. 300,000 at a push for a dunny, the rest......admin charges....

I can see why so many people are excited about this project

I wonder who decided which number he should point at ??

I'd have gone for the 140cm above the shitter myself !!

Well of course but in Europe they have been there for 35 years because they are maintained ,  something Thais care little about so they will just fall into disrepair . Even at  PTT filling stations the disabled toilets are in 50% of the cases poorly and dirty and that is in a company trying to attract customers.  In fact the best maintained toilets generally that I have found are in Homepro stores.   Now both of those examples are private companies so just think what state a public  toilet would soon become.   They can not even cater for disabled on the footpaths why ? they simply don't care about the Thai general public so most certainly they will show no responsibility towards maintaining a public lavatory service certainly not for the disabled as the original picture shows a picture of.  However I suspect the real driver is another scheme open to skimming by the powers that be and doubt the real cost is anywhere near the figures quoted.

Makro is not bad either. At least the ones I visited were absolutely spotless.
