Tomato pickers go on Facebook to appeal for financial help after wife falls sick

Thai Rath reported on the story of two tomato pickers who went to South Korea to work.

Ratanaporn Khotchompu had only been on the job one day when she fell seriously ill with a blood disease.

Her mum Lampeung Bunpetch, 49, said her daughter went with her husband four or five days ago.

The family had already got a 100,000 baht loan and shelled out 60,000 baht to the hospital.

But now they were demanding 180,000 baht.

They had no recourse to more funds and the family are desperate. They want to bring her home to Thailand for treatment.

They gave a bank account number at Krung Thai of 641-0-277-18-0 and a phone number for more details: 08 4379 7464.

No mention was made in the story of any personal insurance or that of the employers.

An excellent point as after all,  "what's good for the goose is good for the gander"..  The other issue is  was this person actually working legally in S Korea ?  Doubt it because the "loan" amount of 100,000 would be for flights,  kick-backs to the middle men and other dubious costs I suspect.

they borrowed that money after they got there the way i read it and already paid 60k to the hospital. so no middle men, dubious costs or kick backs it would seem

It´s just to go to another country and work, after that something happens, and people can´t handle it. Then it´s just to beg total starangers for help.
When is people going to grow a brain and understand that moving to and working in another country demands good planning? It´s not just to take the bag and buy a ticket.
On thing would be to get a good insurance that covers all that can happen.

Of course, everyone should have travel insurance when travelling to another country and that of course includes Thailand.

Sad story sure the hearting message's of support on here won't be helping ?

not necessarily, they  just need  enough cash to be able to cover any losses, this is why I  oppose compulsory insurance, especially in Corruption land

Yes, already borrowed the loan to date not before they went there. explain where it says they borrowed the money prior to the girl ended up in hospital?? it says nothing of the sort you suggested, they have already paid the hospital 60k. leaving only 40k. had they used this money before they went then that's just about their flights covered. but no, they paid dubious people to go their illegally bla bla bla, whatever 555
