Meechai: Govt has power to regulate election campaigns

BANGKOK, 24 September 2018 (NNT) – The former chairman of Thailand's charter drafting organ confirms the administration can exert its power to regulate election campaigns.

Meechai Ruchuphan, former chief of the now-defunct Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC), said today the use of power by the current administration, including the enforcement of Article 44 of the interim constitution, is legitimate, citing the necessity to keep peace and order ahead of the general election.

For this reason, he is of the opinion that the government and the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) can maintain political restrictions while expressing his confidence that the administration will use its power in righteous ways and for appropriate reasons.

As for online election campaigns, he said the Election Commission (EC) will be the agency responsible for overseeing election related activities on social media as well as raising public awareness about false or distorted information.

As for fairness, he advised the EC to issue restrictions on how political parties spend their election campaign funds.

Well done if he kept a straight face spouting that.

As if there is one single person not aware of the junta's power...

The fetid appeasement of classic Thai rhetoric is wonderfully poetic.

Government has power to regulate the outcome of elections is more to the point.

And repeated, ad nauseam, over and again.

Feeling threatened.

Define "righteous ways and appropriate reasons", because I'm pretty sure nobody else is confident that the "administration" won't deviate.

When you steal a government (and country) you can pretty much do whatever you want, including regulate (manipulate) an election.

He is a puppet - they don't do facial expressions...
