Two defence volunteers and an assistant village head were shot dead by insurgents in Songkhla's Thepha district on Sunday evening.

Police said the attack happened at the Tha Yi market in Ban Huay Pling village, Tambon Tha Munag at 5pm.

Abdulloh Yiman, assistant village head of Ban Huay Pling, and Krissada Ti-iadyor and Charan Chanthamunee were killed as they monitored the market from inside a booth.

Police said the three were attacked by four insurgents who arrived on two motorcycles. The pillion riders covered their heads with a hijab and were dressed as women to look like two couples shopping at the market.

Police found 20 spent shells from an M16 rifle and 9mm pistol at the scene.

The insurgents took the two M16 assault rifles and a pistol belonging to the victims and fled in the direction of Khok Pho district, police said.

I suspect it was a more a case of spotting an opportunity to acquire a couple of M16 assault rifles.

Yes.Easy pickings but RIP to the victims.

The minor gov't folk (tho' armed) are easy pickings and are a prime target for terrorists/guerrilla's in most insurgencies.
