Admissions Process For Schools To Become Fairer

Featured Replies

So the addmissions process for schools might become fairer under a new proposel from the Ministry of Education. This would be good news for all (except those who are getting un deserved spots now).

Now if they would only do the same at some universities in America!

From the Bangkok Post:

The Education Ministry wants the cabinet to scrap the admission quota which reserves seats for children of politicians and wealthy patrons at famous schools. A cabinet resolution to this effect would serve as a national policy and would give school directors a powerful excuse when they have to deny granting seats to those children, Education Minister Wijit Srisa-arn said yesterday.

He announced his position in front of directors from 362 well-known schools across the country at a meeting organised by the Basic Education Commission.

''This would be a good start for the transparent and fair practice emphasised by this government,'' said Mr Wijit.

He plans to send the proposal to the cabinet this month and hopes it will be in place for the May semester.

Politicians and wealthy people use their influence and power to pester school directors to admit their children, who often find it hard to deny the requests, he said.

''But with this [resolution], the directors would not be pressured to hide, to turn off their mobile phones or even leave for foreign countries during the school admission period,'' he said.

Whole story here:

Great idea, if put into practice. I shall revert to my Thaksin-era mantra: "Beware, this is a statement by a government official. They are probably not serious."
