Leaving the bar stool ...
On that note, some others, that I'd probably stay at again. Looking at my Gmap reviews, so these are obviously pet friendly with comfy bed. Only 2 things I need, besides parking. If need to be in the area, and travel with a pet, worth a peek ... Ibis (chain hotel) of course, most pet friendly Apple House … Phrae Baan Panmala GH … Ao Luek, Krabi Natai House … Natai, Phang Nga Anita Dream House … Khao Sake area, Surat Thani Sillemon Garden Hotel .. Lat Phrao,BKK Sea Stone Hotel … Sichon, Nakhon Si Thammarat Tree Home Plus Homestay … Nakhon Si Thammarat Thur Hostel … PKK Just the ones I took the time to review on Gmap. Plenty others if needing a recommendation. I may be able to help. We're off the beaten track and budget travelers, so probably lacking amenities some require, that we wouldn't use. -

Denied Entry
Canada's Visa Waiver gives you up to 6 months. I had a friend from Japan stay for 18 months on a 6 month visa waiver plus two extensions... which was not a problem since she could easily prove she could stay without employment or support -- so it was a non-issue. Thai Retirement Visas are glorified tourist/visitor visas that last up to 12 months (non-permanent - same rights as a tourist just longer). -

Maybe, maybe not. Especially given the suspect's claim of self defense. Admittedly, it doesn't look good for the suspect. But it's a confusing story.
