Ten million baht diamond theft: We trusted her like a member of the family

The theft of ten million baht's worth of diamond jewelry from a shop at a supermarket looks very much like an inside job.

A police hunt is on for a woman called Sa, 44, who was described by the owner of the diamond store as a trusted staff member who was treated like one of the family.

"Rat" (an assumed name) aged 48, said that Sa had worked for the firm for ten years and was responsible for the keys and the safe. At the end of the day's trading she would make sure that everything was stored securely.

Contact with her on the 18th of January was normal but it abruptly ceased on the 19th. Thinking that Sa was just sick the owner did nothing but it soon emerged that she had disappeared.

CCTV showed her carting off the loot in a supermarket shopping trolley.

Rat then went to the police.

The suspect's elder sister Noi told reporters that when she arrived home that day she did not have the jewelry with her. She got some clothes and said she was going out on some business.

She left her seven year old son in the care of the family as well as her mother who is bedridden and suffering from cancer.

Noi appealed for her to get in touch describing her as a "good sport" who took care of everyone and all the bills.

She said the family were not angry. They just wanted to hear from her and find out the truth of what happened.

Her boss called for Sa to give herself up to police. She said there was no truth to rumors that she had been selling fake diamonds.

However, an employee called Charoen who worked with Sa suggested that the relationship between Sa and the company was not a normal employee/ boss deal. He said that she was responsible for the rent and that profits were split 60/40.

This seems to reference a franchise relationship - the diamond shop has many outlets.

Charoen also suggested that the 10 million baht price tag on the diamonds was nonsense - he claimed that at most they would have been worth 2 million baht.

The hunt for Sa continues.
