BANGKOK — Thailand is open to considering appeals by FIFA and Australia for the release of a Bahraini footballer detained two months despite holding refugee status, the immigration chief said Thursday.

Lt. Gen. Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn said Thailand has been following international laws regarding the case of Bahraini national Hakeem AlAraibi, who has been jailed since Nov. 27. He said the footballer had to be taken into custody because of arrest warrants from both interpol and the Bahraini government, but said he has the right to due process in the Thai courts based on his refugee status.

Didn't interpol already say that the red notice on him had been canelled?

Attorney Chatchom Akapin of the International Affairs Department said junta chairman Prayuth Chan-ocha has the power to overrule the court final ruling.

Great justice system or should I say gov't?

international rules on Interpol and other countries extradition requests can be controversial. Often the crime alleged may not be a crime in the country that they are in which complicates further. And some requests will have a political background, but we don’t actually know do we.

If he is a flight risk he will have to be detained or won’t be there on his court appearance, so detention is not an unusual option and quiet normal.

Bahrain has the right to ask for an international arrest warrant for any fugitive they are seeking, just as the US Canada UK and Aus do.

He was convicted of vandalizing a police station in 2014. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison in absentia and has denied wrongdoing.

Bahraini authorities have said Araibi can return to appeal against the sentence, noting that others arrested with Araibi who have done so have been acquitted.

So what's the big deal with his absence - extradite him for the formality of acquitting him?

Maybe this: He was a critic of Sheikh Salman Bin Ibrahim al-Khalifa, a member of Bahrain’s ruling family and cousin of the king, when he contested the FIFA presidential election in 2015. Sheikh Salman is president of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). https://www.reuters.com/article/us-bahrain-security-thailand/bahrain-closer-to-extradition-of-footballer-held-in-thailand-idUSKCN1PM1AQ

Disgusting behaviour.

Let him return to Australia.

Thailand just made a lot of good publicity by letting the muslim girl go to Canada; would they risk overturning all that world wide  goodwill by sending this footballer to his torture and eventual death ?

We do not want any more muslims (or some other immigrants), in Australia! They have absolutely no respect for our laws, let alone our culture. Come to Sydney and you will be appalled by the rubbish outside buildings; cars parked on the footpath, feet up on train seats, groups blocking the footpath, etc. (not in all suburbs of course)!
I can't wait to get back to Thailand.

We do not want any more Australians like you here!

When you say "we", does this mean you're a Thai, or just another left wing, politically correct, sexpat?

and its just Muslims/Immigrants that do all that?   I've seen some Aussies do  all those things in the UK,  So should the UK kick all of them out too?

It's not up to you.

When Thailand decides whether or not it want certain nationals in their country it will decide for itself. You are just a paying guest and nothing more.

I bet if you asked a Thai person who they prefer in their country they'd prefer Australians over followers of Islam. Especially Thais in the South of the country.

What a ridiculous observation! I spent 15 years in the UK, and we brought enlightenment and a breath of fresh air to your poor quality, unwashed, cheap, lifestyle !

I for one do not believe a word you've just written.

I live in London which is the tourist centre of the UK and have never seen a single Aussie behaving in such a manner. Their behaviour is beyond reproach even when they've had a drink.

I'm serious.

This should be fun. Will Thailand stand side by side with a fellow mass human rights abuser and hand him over or cave in to pressure from the west like they did recently with the Suadi girl.
