BANGKOK, 7th February 2019 (NNT) – The Cabinet has agreed to accept the Siamese Fighting Fish as a national animal, acknowledging its cultural and historical significance as well as economic opportunities.

Assistant to the Spokesperson of the Prime Minister’s Office Col Athisit Chainuwat explained today that to support the economic opportunities provided by Siamese Fighting Fish following their registry by the Ministry of Culture as part of National Cultural Heritage, the Cabinet has agreed to elevate the species to the status of national animal.

The decision was made as the Cabinet was also being briefed on joint work between the Thai government and European Union officials to overcome Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing in the nation.

The administration was told about further checks to maintain the lifting of an EU yellow flag and lessons to be shared during Thailand’s role as ASEAN Chair in 2019. Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha urged officials to look into domestic the activities of fishing vessels as much as those from abroad.

The Cabinet also approved salary adjustments for the government’s three financial institutions, the Government Savings Bank, Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives and Government Housing Bank.

All three have been allowed to increase base salaries by no more than one percent in acknowledgement of no such increase having been permitted for several years now and so that they may compete with commercial banks.

A fish which fights any other animal who comes close to it, that's why it always has to be alone in a bowl.

Is that a good example for a budhist country?

I'm disappointed, the soi dog has a higher profile than the fighting fish!
