More auctions to be held for high-speed rail project

BANGKOK (NNT) – The Ministry of Transport will be accepting bids for the much-anticipated high-speed rail project in March.

 

Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said on Friday that the construction of the Klang Dong-Pang Asoke railtrack which is the first phase of the high-speed rail project is 50% complete while the second phase, the Sikhio-Kut Chik route, will see a contractor appointed some time in March.

 

He added that more auctions will be held this month and next, with 12 contracts up for grabs, amounting to 235 kilometers of high-speed railway to be constructed.

 

To further improve the country’s transportation system, the ministry will push for more infrastructure projects in Ayutthaya province including the expansion of Highways 3053, 309, 3477, and 356, the construction of a new road linking Rojana Road and Rojana Train Station, a bridge construction project, a new bus terminal in Ayutthaya, and the expansion of Ayutthaya Port.

 

In Sara Buri, the minister said several construction projects are expected to be carried out including an overpass project in Kaeng Khoi district, the extension of Highways 360, 3222, 3034, 3048, 3188, and 362, and a road project connecting the Sara Buri Government Complex and Sara Buri Train Station.

Klong Dong to Pang Asoke is 3.5km, Sikhio-Kut Chik is 11km.

Isn't that odd: Back in 2017, under the heading "Construction bids for high-speed train project in coordination with China to be completed in 2018", the very same guy said (quoted below):

"Arkhom said a total of 13 construction contracts for the Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima route would be open for bidding in 2018 so that construction could be completed and the system become operational in 2021."

It just seems that Thailand is so far behind in so many aspects of this country, that high speed rail should be at the bottom of the list.  I guess it’s the same mentality of the BMW driver that lives in a small room ????

With Thai construction methods - build it as cheap as you can, cut corners whenever possible, and pocket as much as you can, once these hi-speed lines are open, I'll give them 6 months, max, before there is a major breakdown and massive loss of life.

I like the Indian high speed train.  Yesterday on its first run it hit a cow on the line!
