Community Police Officer Found Dead in Suspected Suicide After Delivering Meth Pills for Testing

A senior Thai police officer has been found dead in a suspected suicide, just days after overseeing the transfer of more than 5 million methamphetamine pills to a forensic testing facility in Bangkok. The body of Police Lieutenant Colonel Pongpol, a deputy investigator, was discovered hanging from a tree on the grounds of a hotel in Saensuk subdistrict, Mueang Chonburi district, on the morning of 23 July. The 44-year-old officer was found wearing only khaki trousers and had reportedly used a nylon rope to hang himself from a five-metre-tall tree. Police and emergency services from Tri Khunatham Rescue Unit, along with a doctor from Chonburi Hospital, were called to the scene. His body has since been transferred to the Police General Hospital in Bangkok for autopsy. Investigations reveal that on 20 July, Pol. Lt. Col. Pongpol had been assigned by his superior, Pol. Lt. Col. Pradoong, to oversee the secure transfer of 5,480,000 methamphetamine tablets, seized as evidence, to the Bangkok Forensic Science Centre. He was accompanied by seven junior officers: one police sergeant, one corporal, and five lance corporals. The drugs were delivered on 21 July for official verification and counting, but how and why Pongpol later travelled to Chonburi remains unclear. Crucially, the deceased officer had filed an official statement at Saensuk Police Station on 22 July at 21:25, just hours before his death. In the report, he noted that he had participated in the inspection of millions of methamphetamine pills and stated explicitly that, should anything happen to him, it would not be the result of intoxication or accidental exposure to drug fumes. He further alleged that he had experienced serious disagreements with two to three of his subordinates during the counting and verification process. The note was signed and recorded by another officer, Pol. Lt. Col. Rawiphat Ma-iem and included a list of individuals present. Authorities believe Pol. Lt. Col. Pongpol may have been suffering from severe work-related stress and interpersonal conflict, leading him to contemplate self-harm. It was also reported that his service weapon had previously been confiscated by fellow officers due to concerns about his mental wellbeing. He left the Saensuk station shortly after making the statement, only to be found dead the following morning. The Royal Thai Police have launched a formal investigation into both his death and the circumstances surrounding the drug evidence handling. UK Police Slam False Claims Amid Epping Protest Chaos

The protest, embroiled in controversy, saw pro-refugee demonstrators clashing with rival groups, leading to violence and accusations of police misconduct. Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington condemned the individuals responsible for the chaos as "thugs and vandals." Police confirmed that they made 10 arrests after eight officers and two hotel staff members suffered injuries. The unrest followed charges against an asylum seeker for sexual offences, which he has denied. Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, demanded that Chief Constable Harrington resign, alleging that the handling of the situation was "disgraceful." Essex Police, however, categorically denied any wrongdoing, clarifying that some protesters were escorted by vehicle for their safety amidst rising tensions. The unrest escalated, resulting in four men being charged with violent disorder, one of whom also faced charges for damaging property while another was accused of defying an order to remove a face covering. The chief constable expressed gratitude to those who protested peacefully while emphasising the unacceptable nature of the violence and destruction witnessed. In response to the disturbances, Essex Police implemented a dispersal order that took effect at 14:00 BST on Thursday, empowering officers to order individuals suspected of causing trouble to vacate the area or face arrest. This measure aims to ensure Epping's safety and prevent further disruptions. The police urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation online, warning of real-world repercussions. Ch Supt Simon Anslow assured the community that no lawful protest would be impeded, but measures would be taken to maintain order. The protests came in the wake of charges against Hadush Kebatu, a 41-year-old Ethiopian, for sexual assault and related offences. Kebatu denied the allegations and remains in custody following a court appearance. Amid the turmoil in Epping, protests have also erupted outside the Britannia International Hotel, which is located in London's Canary Wharf and has been newly designated as asylum accommodation. While the Home Office stayed tight-lipped about specifics, Tower Hamlets Council confirmed the hotel's use for housing asylum seekers. As Essex Police continue their robust operations to manage future protests, the gravity of maintaining public order and addressing the controversies surrounding asylum accommodations remains evident.
