PHANG NGA:-- The elephant that attacked two Italian tourists during a trek in Phang Nga on Tuesday (Feb 19) has been chained up and left in isolation for a period of one to two months “for assessment”, according to the Phang Nga Department of Livestock Development.

Manuel Trofa, 29, and Francesco Di Megu, 31, were riding the elephant (named Thanwa) along with a mahout through a palm oil plantation with elephant trekking company, Bangkaew Adventure Tour, when the elephant suddenly shook them off in fit of rage and gored Di Megu in the stomach causing his small intestine to spill out.

Sarote Jittakarn of the Phang Nga Department of Livestock Development told The Phuket News that Thanwa, who is approximately 8-9 years old, is still a very young adolescent who was previously used as a circus elephant and had attacked a mahout once before, although the mahout was unhurt.

Do not ride elephants.

And if you really must offer elephants for riding by tourists, how about you don't use one that has a history of violence.

I know it will never happen, but large warning signs should alert humans that Elephants don't appreciate being ridden. To teach them to accept that is a painful process.

DO NOT RIDE ELEPHANTS-ELEPHANTS CAN AND DO KILL HUMANS.

That is just cruelty chaining it up in ISOLATION.  That will made the animals even more stressed and angry!!!  These people have no idea how to take care of these animals at all!

And, I think this 'assessment' by the older mahout is basically going to be torture, beat and starve the animal even more to make it submit.  Need someone down there with hidden camera to video what is happening to it.

For goodness sake, release it back into the wild, or put it in a real sanctuary where it can have as much freedom as possible and not have to be in chains!

So much for the animal cruelty laws here... seems they only apply to street dogs!

I'm really not sure how isolation will work as elephants have a very strong social system and seem to need company.  Lone elephants are the ones that tend to go rogue.

But this is Thailand, profit comes before Elephants welfare !!

<deleted> these people who exploit elephants (tourists included). Leave the peaceful giants alone, any animal including humans would be pushed beyond their limit living in forced servitude.

The elephant trekking company owner and employees should be the ones chained to a stake, and the elephant should be back in the forest with his family!

How about putting it back in the jungle where it belongs.

Dreadful people.

Where it can attack people uncontroled like the innocent woman who went for cloth washing and died after such an attack recently in Hua Hin district.
