Optional: if you'd like, tell us something you find interesting about the music itself or maybe how you relate to it, what it reminds you of. Did it help you come to terms with being gay? With being str8? With being?

When my homophobic brother unsurprisingly late in the game realized the gay liberation movement had a flag, a rainbow flag, he said to me with such indignation but at least a touch of sarcasm: "You stole the rainbow?", realizing his stupidity as he said it. But he said it and I'll never forget it.

Well, we didn't just steal the rainbow, we absconded with the entire song. Here's Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version. Proud to share it with him, pleased he shared himself with the world.

https://www.genremag.com/2018/06/month-of-historic-gay-anthems-over-the-rainbow-1939-the-song-that-inspired-the-pride-flag/

"Lyricist Yip Harburg was a renown activist for racial and gender equality and called “the social conscience of Broadway.” A little over a decade after he won the Oscar for Rainbow, Harburg was blacklisted for his political views during the McCarthy Era....

...According to Aaron Harburg, the songwriter’s openly gay great-great grandson, “Yip was very progressive and probably would have been vocal in support of gay rights, or at least preventing discrimination against gays. Equality was very important to him across the board.”

...in 2017, Garland’s recording of the song was selected for preservation  by the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or artistically significant.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel_Kamakawiwoʻole

"Kamakawiwoʻole was known for promoting Hawaiian rights"...

"Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World"...holds the distinction of being the longest-leading number one hit on any of the Billboard song charts"
