Thailand’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will propose to the cabinet a total ban on the import of plastic waste into Thailand beginning next year.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Gen Surasak Karnjanarat said today that, as imports of plastic waste are to end next year, Thailand will increase recycling of locally-generated plastic waste by as much as 100% within ten years, with the application of new measures that will require plastic products to contain a certain percentage of recycled plastic. The minister added that he is confident that Thailand has the technology and facilities to reach this goal.

Currently, about two million tonnes of plastic waste are generated in Thailand each year but only 500,000 tonnes are recycled.  In the meantime, plastic trash is currently allowed to be imported for use in production of plastic products to save cost.

Raising the questions...

  1. the mechanisms for "licencing" recycling companies are beneficial to whom?
  2. New recycling companies have been formed by which uniformed personnel?
  3. What's in it for the general?

Wow. Never knew we imported plastic; Thais use enough of it all by themselves!

Every step helps, but try changing the mindset of locals , such as diesel emissions , crop burning and plastics abuse , stop the deflections and blame using soft targets and one day blitzes....Thailand has created this poison air and landfill issues with its corrupt lawless defiance ,now the hard work begins , cleaning up the mess...GAME ON

simple it is just money, other countries dont want it, so they "sell". i think the "buyers" get money to dispose the garbage and then its in Thailand, where they will probably burn it, same as in countries like Malaysia. Or they dump it in the oceans.

Every year there is 8 million tons of plastic, that is 8000000000 kg's of plastic dumped in the ocean.

There are several plastic islands as big as the state of Texas floating in the oceans.

IN Thailand they dont collect trash, only in bigger parts, cities. All other places people have to take care of their own garbage , so burn it. Thai government should do more about that, collecting.

In Thailand drinking water is only obtained in bottles, plastic bottles, if you make pure water in the pipelines of cities and good system, it could save tons of plastic.

In Holland you can have all the water just out of the tap, fresh.

However people think here now , they should drink water from bottles ! Morrons.

ALready proven that tiny particles of plastic are in the water bottles, you drink it !!

And worse  of all , aswel in beer !

In not long time we end up like all animals with lots of plastic in our bellies and just die same way as our animals.

We all die eventually.
