Public prosecutor denies press reports they are seeking Thaksin's extradition from Hong Kong

The director of the foreign affairs department of the public prosecutor's office in Thailand has denied press reports that the Thais are going after former PM and fugitive Thaksin Shinawatra in Hong Kong.

Chatchachom Akkhapin said there was no truth in stories linking his department with efforts to extradite Thaksin from Hong Kong.

An Instagram post suggested that Thaksin would be in Hong Kong on Friday to attend the wedding of his youngest child, daughter Paetongtarn "Ung-Ing" Shinawatra.

Chatchachom said no contact had been made with the Hong Kong authorities. But he conceded that though Thailand and Hong Kong have no formal extradition treaty it would still be possible to request the return of a wanted fugitive if the evidence presented was sufficient.

In the first instance they would need to ascertain the address of Thaksin in Hong Kong and the public prosecutor's office are not aware of his whereabouts in Hong Kong.

However, he seemed to leave the door open to obtaining this information.

The denial follows a post on "thaksinlive" on Instagram earlier in the week that indicated Thaksin would be in Hong Kong for "Ung-Ing"'s wedding on the 22nd of March, this Friday.

Hit and hope then .. Why don't they just accept he's gone and leave it at that .. this occasional raking the coals to keep 'em in the public mind is a waste of time ..

It does seem strange that they want to keep him in the public eye immediately before the election doesn't it?

Not so much shooting themselves in the foot as breakdancing in a minefield!

Or maybe the Shin PR machine did it to get his name up before voters again and make it look like the authorities are incompetent (which most Thais know anyway).

Well they could start with the address of the house Thaksin owns in Hong Kong, it has been publicised often enough in the past. I am sure someone in the office could find it without too much trouble, or they could ask the Thai representative in HK to find out.

Given the amount of time TS spends in China and HK they might find a couple of road blocks if they actually tried given who he seen associating with.

As I expected "fake news" from the out start!!

Thai people must understand this: The international community does not believe in your justice system. Thaksin is free to go where he wants but Freeland (Thailand).

Napoleon Bonaparte is supposed to have said when considering some cock-up or other: "Don’t ascribe to malice what can be plainly explained by incompetence.""

Having enthusiastically participated in some magnificent cockups in my time, and knowing the propensity of (all) militaries in that area, I am quite prepared to accept that as the explanation!

. . . . . . has denied press reports that the Thais are going after former PM and fugitive Thaksin Shinawatra in Hong Kong.

Meaning, of course, that the PPO have already reserved HK/BKK flight tickets for Thaksin . . . plus a friend and business class, of course.

Wise decision as no first world country is going to extricate a Shinawatra back to Thailand and the Thai government would simple embarrass themselves by trying.  They would simply find out where they stand in the new world order.  My guess is they don't want to know.

Arresting Thaksin two days before elections would create the perfect martyr - something some people in the land certainly do not want to happen.
No action by the government despite a court ruling - that is another thing. Getting Thaksin out of a 5* hotel function room into the slammer would require the Hong Kong authorities (as Thais have no jurisdiction over anything non-Thai; like it or not) and my guess would be, that the paperwork is not ready anyhow - go figure.
