Thanks also for the link. I have downloaded all the lessons as .mp3 files and am now copying them to Audacity so that I can edit out all the excruciatingly long pauses for student responses. Then I will output as .wav files and convert to .wma using jetAudio . Finally I will download to my mp3 player.

I was able to view the student text a few days ago but did not save to disc. Today I cannot access it at all. Is there a problem downloading the text or is it due to my computer settings?

I don't know if you were planning to do the editing manually, but if so, you might be able to save a bit of time with the beta version of Audacity. See:

I think the audio files are nice but I think the book is useless because it doesn't have a Thai script in it. I have a visual memory and when I talk i "see" the words in my mind. I want to avoid linking the words with the wrong "image" so I avoid all transliterations.

The audio quality is not very good because the sound is enoded at 32 kbit and you can hear the noise of the original tape. But I think the quality is still acceptable.

If I understood correctly there's also a part 2 and part 3 which contains thai script. I hope they will put these parts also online.

Thanks for the Audacity info. I haven't tried it yet though.

The big problem I have with all language tapes is staying awake to listen to them. Working with Audacity I can also edit out all the English prompts and at the same time force myself to listen to them.

The sound quality ot the FSI tapes is not so good so some of the words in Thai (even the words I know well) are difficult to recognise. The text helps you to identify these words (which is why I want to download the text).

The beta version of Audacity works a treat. At -30dB setting I can cut out all the quiet pauses, and then go back in and finalise editing out all the English comments.

One advantage of making .wma files over .mp3 files is I believe, that you can store twice as much data on an 'mp3' player. The downside on my Creative player however is that battery consumption is a bit higher.

I will be doing a 6 week trek soon so I need lots of recorded Thai to pass the time and to keep my ear 'in'.

I think there are some at seasite, but you might have to assemble them sentence by sentence.
