Crack in coalition as Sam Mitr group demands key economic portfolios

Sira-Jenjaka.jpg

With the dust is yet to settle over the election of General Prayut Chan-o-cha as the next prime minister, signs of division have emerged in the Palang Pracharat-led coalition as the influential Sam Mitr faction, at the core of the party, has reportedly reasserted their demand for the agriculture, commerce and transport portfolios, already promised to the Democrat and Bhumjaithai parties.

Bangkok MP Sira Jenjaka, a member of the Sam Mitr group, said today that the group was very concerned that they would not be able to respond to the needs of their supporters because they would not have control over these three Grade-A ministries.

He claimed that the party managed to clinch 116 House seats in the March 24th general election because the party’s policy platform, to look after the farmers, was welcomed by the farmers and the party should keep its promises to them.

It's funny (and sad) that the majority of the populace see this Government's promises as false, yet, other, greedy politicians cannot

So they can jump ship but they cannot change the rotten PM.

"No honour among thieves" comes to mind.

sounds just like the UK , one votes for something promised, and then they lie out of the hole in their asses to wriggle out of it

Why he not so concerned about promises to voters before taking prayuts brown envelope .

basically after ministry positions as know it further good income sources .

It will be interesting to see how Prayut handles issues like this when has to negotiate with greedy fellow politicians and can't order or bully them into submission.

Or when will it all start to unravel, my guess is coming soon meaning loss of seats and eventually a challenge by the other coalition - bring it on....

sounds like the Democrat and Bhumjaithai parties , might suddenly want to join the ffp!!!!!!!!

"Demand for the agriculture, commerce and transport portfolios"

Thai politics is all about controlling budgets to enrich themselves through corruption.

There is nothing there for the people at all.

Just imagine if the new army chief has his eyes on the prize.

now we will see if this so called coalition holds together or they lose to the opposition, that would be a real laugh, greed is going to destroy them all, has nothing to do with any of their so called supporters that voted for them its all about how much they can pocket by getting into ministries

I hope they all screw it up good and proper and the economy tanks, as that will be the only thing that has any chance of ushering in any change.

Thais generally have no ability to tactfully handle conflict. So, without knowing anything else about their "coalition", I know it's almost certainly likely to fail.

As much as I dislike Prayuth,  I believe he will have his hands full controlling the various trough mongers without his protection of 44.

Unfortunately the parliament his Constitution wanted will not work beyond 12 months at the most.

Either he will fall flat on his face or get himself another dose of 44 to control the cluster f$%k he has created.

Exactly what I was thinking: 'We've got what we needed from you, now p!ss off'...

While the 3 main parties fight over the cabinet positions, the other 16 smaller parties can only watch and be shoved around doing unimportant portfolios. Worst than pulling down their trousers and waiting for their fate.

I think the whole joke of a 'government' will pretty soon collapse, Eric. There is no way this lot can negotiate with others. All they know is how to dominate, boss, and be d. di .. dinosaurs.

The whole sorry pretence of a 'government' will come crashing to the ground within a year - and then, eventually, the tanks will roll again (literally or figuratively).

That is all this mob know. 'Might is right' (according to them - but not according to real HUMAN beings!).

no one asks questions why most thai politicians are in the millionaire and billionaire club ?

So PPRP has to keeps its word, but you don't mind if the other parties break their promises through joining you. Holeass!

Prayut may soon discover a whole new world of governance after he is sworn in as civilian elected PM.

Currently, Prayut has a four-seat majority lead in the House. If five seats flip, a simple majority of the House MP's can invoke a no-confidence censure debate against PM Prayut. Should there follow a simple majority vote for no-confidence, the MP's can remove the new Prayut government (PM Prayut and Cabinet)by placing it into "caretaker status" and call for new elections. Prayut then must dissolve the House in preparation for new elections.

However, (from what I have read) both the Senate and House can renominate Prayut back into the PM office and forestall censure debate for one year. I don't know whether a majority vote is required separately in each or in total. If 'in total' then the pro-military Senate will surely force Prayut's retention as PM. But the amount of political and personal pressure on Prayut during such a process no doubt will be personally uncomfortable. He may see an elected PM in a new light for which he might not desire.

You are right on both subjects. While the lower house has the constitutional rights to initiate a non confidence vote, a new prime minister will still have to be subjected to a combined house voting and the viscous cycle continue with Prayut as PM but the deadlock in lower house continue. Few things may happen; another coup, another election or Prayut replaced. It will happen; not how but when.
