World Blood Donor Day falls on Friday (June 14) and many Thais chose to mark the occasion in advance by giving blood over the weekend at the National Blood Centre in Bangkok.

World Blood Donor Day commemorates Karl Landsteiner, the Austrian scientist and physician who identified and developed the ABO blood group system.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) annually invite Red Cross Societies in all countries to organise activities to express gratitude to blood donors so as to raise public awareness of the importance and necessity of voluntary blood donation.

The Thai Red Cross Society will organise an activity to mark this occasion on Saturday (June 15) at the National Blood Centre on the theme “Safe Blood for All”. Besides the chance to donate blood and receive a T-shirt, people can take part in fun games to win prizes and enjoy mini-concerts by celebrities and singers, Similar events would be held at Regional Blood Centres nationwide.

They don't want mine (not Thai anyway), I'm a boring O+ but still...

Now too old, but previously I failed the "did you live in the UK at the end of the 20th century" question (mad-cow disease).

If I was dying from lack of a transfusion I would take my chances of (maybe) getting CJD or (definitely) dying from blood loss.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

AS above, a most oft needed O -, but now considered too OLD , although my mother gave blood in the UK up to her mid 80's, here over 65 too old. Typical Thai head in the sand syndrome, so sad, unable to help even when asked for. Hope there is Red Cross worker needing O Neg, that will wake them up.
