Thailand's friend-for-hire services grow in Bangkok

  • Popular Post

Friend-for-hire services are gaining ground in Thailand, with people paying companions to join trips, take photographs or take part in activities.

The emerging trend reflects a changing Thai social landscape, including an ageing population and more unmarried people, although there are no official figures for the sector. Providers say demand has risen in recent years as more people live alone, lifestyles change and social media raises the appeal of shareable experiences.

Euromonitor International said single-person households accounted for 29.5 per cent of Thai households in 2025, above the global average of 21.9 per cent. The trend has also increased demand for services aimed at independent living, from single-seat restaurant tables to solo travel.

Convenience, photos and company

For some Thai customers, the service is about practical help rather than loneliness. Bangkok university student and content creator Ainthuon Rattanawaraporn said she first tried it out of curiosity, but found it useful when friends were too busy to travel and she was not yet comfortable going alone.

"I also wanted someone to take pictures for me," she said. Unlike asking friends for a favour, a paid companion meant she could request particular angles and compositions without worrying about asking someone to take hundreds of photos.

Thanaporn Charoenchuea, a 20-year-old university student, launched her Snap Like A Bestie service and served more than 50 clients within about two months. She said customers wanted more than photographs: they also wanted to feel comfortable enough to produce natural-looking images.

On busy days, Thanaporn accepts up to three bookings lasting one to three hours. She chats with clients to help shy or introverted people relax, and accepts appointments only in public places after checking clients' social-media accounts.

Providers set their own boundaries

Penkawin Wangniwetkul, known as Ice, entered the companionship business about three months ago after relatives suggested she accompany two elderly women on shopping trips and outings. She had previously left a full-time job as a television co-producer and worked as a presenter, MC and online marketing host.

Ice now accepts assignments for running, gym sessions, aerobics, shopping, spa visits, cafe hopping and indoor rock climbing. Her usual bookings last two to three hours and cost 1,000 baht per hour.

She has served more than 10 regular clients, including public figures, and once accompanied an actress to a veterinary clinic. She has also been asked to attend wedding receptions, but was too busy, and limits bookings because she continues to work as an MC and presenter.

She screens clients and refuses requests that could affect her safety or make her uncomfortable, including accompanying male clients to late-night entertainment venues.

Demand reaches Chiang Mai

Company employee Sasiprapa Nookong hired a companion while visiting Chiang Mai after she and a friend chose separate activities for a day. While her friend went hiking, Sasiprapa wanted to visit cafes and found a university student offering the service through TikTok reviews.

She said such services suited people who occasionally wanted company, rather than long-term companionship.

Sociologist Narupon Duangwises of the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre said hired companions could provide emotional comfort for people who struggle to make friends. However, he noted that clients can select companions by appearance, unlike natural friendships, and urged providers to set clear rules and boundaries against sexual harassment and violence.

Before the digital era and the anti-social media we had real friends, people who we have a drink, go out, on holiday, have fun, and good talks....not emoji, and abbreviations..tbh, lol, etc......Loneliness is a real problem nowadays

I am also now offering the service ....primarily to lonely university students . I assure them that, because of my age now .... they can feel confident that if anything happens where they are feeling deeply attracted to me and thus "uncomfortable" ...... they can simply run away as i doubt i could catch them.

Lonely old people can also contact me ... but i do charge a bit more (for having to listen to all the stories about how they used to be)

So kind of like a Personal Assistant that some rich people hire.

They run errands with you, help with daily tasks, appointments, etc.

The gym, spa, and physical activities would be out of the scope of a personal assistant.

Whatever, like previously mentioned most have fake friends anyways so why Not Add one more to the list if needed.

I like the challenge of making friends and being in those situations where you are doing some activity with others and making it work.

Been the norm in some resorts/Soi's for decades

I’m also available to provide that service. I’ll go one better. Instead of she paying me, I’ll pay her. But read the fine print first. 😜

If you're willing to pay a stranger to be your friend why not just cut out of the middle man and make a "friend finder" which is like a dating app but strictly for friends. Both people want a friend so there's no reason to compensate each other with money. Very strange this service even exists but their must be some reason for it (mental illness comes to mind).

That's a contradiction: people with money have a lot of "friends"

Well, established since ages as "hostess service"

You forget that in Thailand everything is measured in money. Friendships exist if you pay for it, even a drink at home, you pay the drinks and your "friends" will join you, or be your friend if they can borrow your money with no pay back

Friends for friends doesn't exist here

And there will reactions that people say i have real friends, i know that a lot of Thai people esnt to be a friend to show " that they have a foreigner"as friend. But I am not a showobject

People kiss less, date less, have sex less and go out less. When they do go somewhere therefore they have no friends and have to pay a stranger to pretend.

What a world we have in store.

In a materialistic world, even friendship doesn't exist anymore.

Everything has a price tag. People only do things for money.

Sad stuff.

When I was younger I could manage two friends.

Now I'm old, one is enough.

Never really understood how someone could manage the time for more than two friends.

My family always took up most of my spare time.

A bit of a twist on 'friend with benefits' ya think?

I have many friends on social media.

None that I would rent for type of nature pics/vids that I make.

I have found mental illness to be a real show stopper in all relationships . Probably should be added to the "most common human traits" list .

I say this from decades of personal experience ; many times coming from the other person . some times from me !

A very good point. I always only had one close friend. As a child, as teenager, at Uni, after that your social circle gets bigger, but the close friendship is really only with one person at a time. Indeed, as you pair bond, get married, it is the wife and family that take up your energy, so close friendships after that are rare.

If you haven’t read the article then yes, you might think it resembles exactly that.

On the other hand, if you read the article you would see that its entirely different to the provision of sexual services for money.

As commented by another poster, it’s a somewhat sad indictment of today’s world that we live in, but it’s not prostitution.

“Friends” in quotation marks? 😂 I think you’ve just made my point for me.

Isn't this Labeled wrong anyways.

Not rent a Friend, it's rent a like minded individual at best.

Friend, Acquaintance, Like minded individual are different.

Plus many different levels of for each.

I find it strange but have no problem with it.

When I first retired to Chiang Mai, I already had a local American contact who had a business here. I hired, at his suggestion, one of his English speaking employees on an "as needed" basis. She helped me with opening the bank accounts, helped with contracting to buy a car (did not happen as it was 2011 and the rainy season flooded the factories delaying manufacturing for 6 months). Yes, I can see the need to ease life for a number of retirees here.

Providing assistance with travel, shopping and banking for newbies can be classified as concierge services. Unfortunately, a work permit wouldn't be available, so the only option would be a local person who is both comfortable conversing in foreign language(s) and dealing with ornery old farangs who know too much already.

...Is This A 'Protected/Restricted' Activity... (?)

...Or Open To Foreigners... (?)

...As 'Specialized Service'... (?)

No. This is more like hiring a assistant or a private concierge. The vast majority of these situations have nothing to do with sex.

Perhaps some might have a connection with loneliness but companionship is a very different thing than sexual favors.
