UBON RATCHATHANI (NNT) - During this rainy time of the year, the northeastern province of Ubon Ratchathani features a procession that’s like no other: the shrimp parade at Kaeng Lamduan. It is a phenomenon that tourists are willing to wait for.

The phenomenon in which a large number of shrimps march along the land, can now be seen at Kaeng Lamduan, Ubon Ratchathani Wildlife and Nature Education Center, Dome Pradit subdustrict, Nam Yuen district, Ubon Ratchathani province. Because of rains in August and September every year, the currents in Kaeng Lamduan become too strong for the shrimps that need to migrate to an upstream area of Lamdome Yai stream to mate, so they bypass the rapids and travel along the rocky waterside instead.

The number of parading shrimps each night depends on the strength of the rapids; the higher the volume of rainwater falling into Lamdome Yai stream, the more shrimps are likely to be seen.

Ubon Ratchathani has called on people and farmers in the community to help reduce the use of agricultural chemicals that have an impact on the environment, because it may affect the small shrimps, and the annual parade would be much missed.
