Thailand Is Being Too Good for Its Own Good

The economy is geared for post-Asian-crisis atonement, not for an era when stimulus is needed.

Thailand really should let its hair down. The currency is strong and the current-account surplus is big versus the neighborhood, while there's a lot of scope for fiscal expansion. The Bank of Thailand has been grudging in cutting interest rates, in contrast to the easing party under way not just in Asia but in emerging and developed markets the world over.

 

On one level, the sobriety is admirable. Thailand was the first domino to fall in the Asian financial crisis of 1997-98; the baht's collapse and Bangkok's flimsy economic management will forever be associated with one of the most wrenching periods in Asia's postwar history. 

But Thailand may have learned the lessons too well. Its policy settings look like they are primed for truly dire times –  few predict a coming catastrophe – and insufficiently calibrated to prolong growth or mitigate a shallow recession.

The usa stock market will crash. Today tomorrow its inevetible. The entire world will be brought into the usa implosion. 

I dont think thailand will survive the gloable depression. Not with tourism and not with exports.

The subs and tanks and such actually might be needed to keep all us westerners from migrating to the teflon thailand.

Me i am going to indonesia and change all my usd into rupia. And live on a secluded island. The exchange rate is nearly at a 10 year all time high.  A pcx 150 is 800 usd cheaper in indo.

The people are friendly.I was in thailand for the beaches and those are all now destroyed from plastic and chinese tourism. Seriously cheap living in indonesia. Not much tourism.

I think it good to be prepare to much. The world economy very weak now, Brexit, China slower, Donald impeach, Europe negative. Many euro people not have enough money for Thailand holiday.

 

Maybe other county will sink soon, thailand will still be fly! 

Thailand is right to be cautious. The world is sinking into recession and domestic household debt is at worryingly high levels.

 

The last thing they should do is to heed Bloomberg's exhortation and take the advice of the loan sharks at the IMF.

Ah, I just tried it and found a message saying I was only allowed 1 more free article this month. They track your device and count your articles. I read some of their stuff from links on Flipboard and have noticed this approach with several content providers.
