A 70 year old British tourist rushed to the aid of a Thai man who was about to jump from a pedestrian bridge in Pattaya yesterday evening.

David Baxter, 70, just managed to get the Thai man's collar but was unable to stop him falling.

Fortunately, 45 year old Bunthiang was not badly hurt as he fell on grass.

He was taken to Bang Lamung Hospital with chest pains.

Mr Baxter told reporters that he had seen the man about to jump and ran to his aid. He grabbed him but was not in time to stop him falling.

He showed a handful of the man's collar that had torn off.

The incident happened on a pedestrian overpass near the junction of Sukhumvit Road and Central Pattaya.

Earlier yesterday morning the same man was seen on the bridge and was talked round by rescue services who feared he was going to jump. He went home after that.

77kaoded said the man was suffering from a skin disease that has caused him to be stigmatized by society.

They speculated that his inability to get work due to the diease had led to the suicide attempt.

Wow, the mental health system here is one to be envious of. Not.

In the UK Care in the Community allows some of the mentally ill to roam unfettered against their best interests and those of the general public.

In the US the mentally ill can buy assault weapons and kill and maim people at school, at worship, shopping and just out spending time enjoying themselves.

More concerning is the issue of physical discrimination in the society...

can’t comment on the mental health system but sure don’t see many crazy people like the West...could have something to do with keeping mentally ill people suppressed in their home village or in an institution...

cheap shirt...

Second to none !

He wasn't suffering from mental health issues!  Why are so many posters claiming that he was?...

Yes the man had a skin disease the primary issue, which led him to become mentally unstable wishing to end his life!

The two are interlinked.

The disease and subsequent "stigmatized by society" would've almost certainly affected his mental health. As he was seen on the same bridge before he should've been looked after, and not sent home.

With Thailand's HEALTH CARE.... and the present falsely elected dictatorship.... More concerned with Submarines for 'FACE' and Armoured Personell Carriers/Tanks.... Not for war but for use agains't Thai demonstrators who contest this government........

THIS POOR MAN wanting to take his own life was probably intent on the 'ONLY' option left for him... The Thai Gov't certainly has no help for HIM.... And HIS 'poor' THAI family is in no financial position to help....

A KIND 'RIP' may be the 'best' that is in store for this poor chap......... I can certainly sympathise with his 'Problems and NO hopes'......

DON'T FORGET........................ TIT (This Is Thailand) 😂

Pity he will not likely get the help he needs (in Thailand, thanks to present Gov't) and will be better off commiting suicide... ending all his miseries......

Thailand IS NOT the only country where this is a problem....... BUT Thailand is a country that Claims to be on the 'RISE' and still won't help it's own people.....

Near 40 years of 'loving' Thailand and It's people, 'I' have serious concerns NOW for the Thai People.... and I'm not concerned for the 'RICH'.... It is the 'POOR' that I love and am concerned for...........

The pensioner is to be commended for his attempts.

Why?

The poor man had problems that he wanted to end. Doubt it was an easy decision, he probably thought long and hard before his attempt.

Has his rescue solved any of his problems?

He is just as badly, if not worse than before his suicide attempt, doubt he is thanking his savior.

Sad but there it is. 🙁
