webfact
UNHCR praises Thailand’s displaced persons protection BANGKOK (NNT) - The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has praised Thailand’s role in providing care and protection to displaced persons based on the principles of compassion and humanity. The Ministry of Defence Spokesman, Lt Gen Kongcheep Tantravanich, revealed that Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan welcomed the visiting UNHCR Director of the Bureau for Asia and the Pacific, Indrika Ratwatte, at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Bangkok upon the inauguration of his mission. The Deputy Prime Minister said the government has been working closely with the UNHCR Regional Office for South East Asia, and praised the success of the drafting of the international agreement on refugees, serving as a tool to help solve refugee issues based on the delegation of duties and responsibilities. Thailand actively participated in the negotiations and implementation. He said that Thailand will be sending high-level officials to join related meetings, and pledged to provide support in areas in which the country specializes. The DPM stressed Thailand has placed priority on returning displaced persons from Rakhine state in Myanmar to their origin. ASEAN, working closely with the UNHCR, is now on track to initiate cooperative projects in Rakhine to support the efforts in creating an environment suitable for the return of displaced persons, bringing long-term peace back to the region. The UNHCR’s Asia and the Pacific director praised the leadership of the Thai government in helping people displaced by warfare, which he said is a good model for the region and the world. He said the UNHCR will be providing operational support to the Thai government for its present and future initiatives on refugees. -- © Copyright NNT 2019-12-05 Follow Thaivisa on LINE for breaking Thailand news and visa info

Somebody must have been on the Lao Khao early. Throughout recent history, they have provided shelter for Cambodians during the Khmer Rouge days and the different states fighting the Burmese junta. UNHCR is probably doing some apple polishing to get the ultra rich Thai Army to do more. The Thai junta is desperate for acceptance and recognition, so the UNHCR are probably doing that to get more from them.

Aussiepeter
What utter garbage ! Has the UNHCR forgotten the mass graves of trafficked Rohingya refugees found in the south of Thailand a couple of years ago, or the fact that the ringleaders convicted included a Thai Army General and senior police and government officials ? Did any of these criminals ever serve any real time ? The UNHCR itself has been widely reported as saying that 'like several other countries' governments, the junta led by General Prayut does not permit the UNHCR to properly investigate the treatment of Rohingya refugees in Thailand'. I live in an area of Oz known for its' quality "alternative tobacco". I do not partake (suds does it for me) but when I read this report, my first thought was 'this new UNHCR must have been to the local festival, which is called "Mardi-Grass" and inhaled once too much' !
Eligius
We always have to remember that this absolute intelligence-insulting nonsense is what the Thai junta are CLAIMING was said. That is very different from what was actually said, with all its nuances and caveats and conditions, etc. And note that the 'news' here comes from the 'National News Bureau of Thailand' - real opponents and challengers of the junta - NOT!
