Phuket’s marine police were joined by divers and ships from the Third Naval Area Command in searching for the body a crew member of the speedboat which was involved in a collision with a private yacht off the coast of Phang Nga on Wednesday (December 18).

Kittipong Samanbutr, 21, was washed into the sea in the accident and has not been seen since.

The search operation received the support of the local office Marine Department in Phang Nga, the Provincial Administration Organization, Phuket’s tourist assistance centre as well as local fishing boats and tour vessels. The accident occurred around 5pm off Khai Nok Island in Koh Yao district. Ten people were injured and the captain of the speedboat’s died later at a hospital in Phuket.

An investigation indicated that the yacht hit the speedboat while the latter was heading out from Khai Nui Island. “The speedboat captain tried to avoid the yacht but it was simply too big,” a police spokesman said.

IMO, with decades of personal boat ownership and boat driving experience, it would seem to me that neither one was prepared to "give way" until it was too late.

Either one should have been able to predict a possible collision.

The original report said the speedboat/tourist boat hit the cabin cruiser. Now they are saying/blaming the Russian operated cabin cruiser hit the speedboat??? Can any locals possibly talk to the Russian involved. I know who I would believe if it comes down to two versions.

Sure the yacht hit the speedboat as the speedboat recklessly cut in front of it.

That's a distinct possibility. But there should be lots of unbiased witness reports that will eventually surface.

The passenger list (countries) read like a league of nations.

Yes there certainly should be some non biased reports.

Rules to remember when two vessels meet

When two power-driven vessels are in crossing situation on a collision course, give way to the vessel to starboard (right). The give way vessel must take early and obvious action to avoid a collision by either stopping or altering course to starboard.
As the damage on the speed boat is on the port  side of the hull , he came to starboard  of the yacht. Normally it was the  yacht that should have taken action to avoid the collision.
