Draft U.N. resolution condemns Israeli annexation in Trump peace plan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A draft United Nations Security Council resolution on Tuesday condemned an Israeli plan to annex its settlements in the West Bank in a rebuke of President Donald Trump’s pro-Israel peace proposal.

The draft text, circulated to council members by Tunisia and Indonesia, would seemingly face a U.S. veto, but nonetheless offered some members’ dim view of the peace plan that Trump rolled out last week with great fanfare.

Diplomats said negotiations on the text would likely begin later this week. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to speak to the council next week about the plan, possibly coinciding with a vote on the draft resolution.

The resolution “stresses the illegality of the annexation of any part” of occupied Palestinian territories and “condemns recent statements calling for annexation by Israel” of these territories, according to the draft seen by Reuters.

Trump’s plan, the product of three years effort by senior adviser Jared Kushner, would recognise Israel’s authority over the settlements and would require the Palestinians to meet a highly difficult series of conditions to be allowed to have a state, with its capital in a West Bank village east of Jerusalem.

Kushner is due to brief Security Council ambassadors on the plan on Thursday.

While the Palestinians have rejected the plan, a number of Arab governments have said it represents a starting point for a renewal of long-stalled negotiations.

The resolution stresses the need for an acceleration of international and regional efforts to launch “credible negotiations on all final status issues in the Middle East peace process without exception.”

A U.S. veto at the council level would allow the Palestinians to take the draft text to the 193-member U.N. General Assembly, where a vote would publicly show how Trump's peace plan has been received internationally.

So what we have here is Islamic countries drafting resolutions against Isreal - I wonder how far it will get?  Me hopes the UN will realise soon that they need to resolve the unspoken truth about the 'Palestinians' - there is no Palestine and there are no Palestinian territories and there never was and never will be - and Israel is staying right where it is.

There has been 6 drafted 'peace plans' involving Isreal and those who previously lived in that part of Jordan that was annexed in the 1940s to create Isreal - all 6 of them have been rejected/destroyed by the 'palestinians'.  The reason is simple - they want Isreal removed from the face of the earth and they will settle for nothing less - they do not want peace and they never will.

Brave post, expect to get several 'sad and confused' and some nonsensical feedback from the many members here who sees it in entirely different light..

Having said that, it was said the the Palestinians never missed an opportunity to miss and opportunity and even they were give 95% of the land back Arafat has refused, and so the game continue...

The reality of the situation is that the 'palestinians' are a terrorist hate group that are funded by Iran with the sole purpose of 'fighting' against Isreal.  They never missed the opportunity to miss an opportunity (for peace) because they dont want peace - they want a never ending war - it is what they are and what they do.  IMO the only solution is to cut off their funding - Iran.  But that is something that would cause far more problems then they are worth - so the game continues ????

Yes the UN are resolving the palestinian country issue.  There are 193 UN nations. 138 of them recognise palestine as a country.

This is not a peace plan.

The reality of the situation is that Israel is a pariah state funded by the US taxpayer, whose sole purpose is stealing the land that belongs to other people claiming, that their sky fairy gave them the right to do it.

The Palestinians have been supported by many, many countries, and only by Iran amongst them, relatively recently. Many people who love selling arms to the head choppers of Saudi refuse to see that most terrorist organisations (Including ISIS and Al Qaeda) are in fact Sunni not Shia.

Your reality is false.  Learn some history - the Jews have existed there for thousands of years - heard of Jesus?

Palestinian Muslims primarily practice Shafi'i Islam, which is a branch of Sunni Islam - a very violent branch.

Stop watching left wing media and websites - they are fake news and lie.

The Jews lost ownership of the area after being conquered by the Romans two thousand years ago and were a minority group for hundreds of years. Sure the establishment of the State of Israel was mandated by the UN in 1947. However, i suggest there are plenty of people who in hindsight consider the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 a strategic error for stability of the region.

That is so factually incorrect as to warant some education.

The birthplace of the Jewish people is the Land of Israel (Eretz Yisrael). There, a significant part of the nation's long history was enacted, of which the first thousand years are recorded in the Bible; there, its cultural, religious, and national identity was formed; and there, its physical presence has been maintained through the centuries, even after the majority was forced into exile. During the many years of dispersion, the Jewish people never severed nor forgot its bond with the Land. With the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Jewish independence, lost 2,000 years earlier, was renewed.

Archeology in Israel  involves the systematic investigation of all the remains of the country's past - from prehistory to the end of Ottoman rule. The profusion of material remains is evidence of the many cultures that have left their imprint on the Land.

Above all archeological research clearly reveals the historical link between the Jewish people, the Bible and the Land of Israel, uncovering the remains of the cultural heritage of the Jewish people in its homeland. These visible remains, buried in the soil, constitute the physical link between the past, the present and the future of the Jewish people in its country.

This unbroken chain of history can be observed at sites all over the country. Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, has been the focus of extensive archeological activity and remains of 5,000 years of history have been revealed.

Glad you acknowledge Jewish peoples lost ownership two thousand year ago. All your other comments are 'so what'... Now the world has no other option but to try and address the ongoing conflict and misery of millions of people. However, trump and Co have created an even greater challenge for a regionally acceptable compromise. One hopes in the future Israel and Palestine come up with leaders who can mutually agree solutions for the problems.

I cant argue with that - peace would be good.

The plan is in contradiction with previous resolutions which don't recognise the Israeli settlements. Actually nearly all countries consider they are illegal. So It's not only an issue of Islamist countries.

"Stop watching left wing media and websites - they are fake news and lie."

I don't need to be told what to watch by you or anyone, it appears you think you are someone special, giving out instructions.

The fake news line is Trumps favourite, this from a man who has told 10,000 plus verifiable lies in just a few years in office. The fake news comes from Breibart, and Fox. When you sent Rupert Murdock to the West you poisoned the world with the spawn of Satan.

Odd that you choose Mel Gibson for your personal picture, one of the worlds most famous anti-semites.

Trolling, baiting post removed.   Continue and face a suspension.

All fanfare and no substance.

A typical trump plan.
