Cambodia wild fires blamed for Thailand’s air pollution

According to a report published in The Thaiger, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has closed public schools from Wednesday because of excessive air pollution. Most of the smoke and haze is blowing in from Cambodia with light easterly winds.

All schools under the supervision of the BMA will close until Friday. Air quality in the capital has worsened over the past few days with Bangkok recurring the world’s 5th worst air pollution yesterday (today it is 10th). The forecast is for light winds and poor air circulation which will compound the accumulation of PM2.5 dust and smoke particles. While efforts have been made to reduce pollution in the capital, the poor air quality in Thailand has been blamed on plantation burn-offs from sugar, corn and rice fields in the central, north and north-east of Thailand, plus easterly airflows blowing in the same burn-off smoke from Cambodian farms.

Back in the city, district officials and municipal police will patrol open areas to make sure there is no burning outdoors, while city workers will spray water in the air and on roads to wash away dust. The whole of Bangkok and its vicinity were found to contain excessive amounts of PM2.5 dust and smoke particles yesterday, measuring up to 188, nearly 4 times the upper safe limit imposed by the Pollution Control Department, and nearly 8 times the limit set by the World Health Organisation.

no possible pollution created within Thailand.  blame it on anybody else.  job done.

The pollution levels appear to be better in Issan than in the North.  You do the math.

What if we find out pollution kills Corona?  That would be funny is amazingly sad way.

That's  not what they say.

But obviously burning in Cambodia is even worse than in Thailand.

And the outcome depends much of the winds.

Last week enthusiasm about clean air in Bangkok -> southern winds.

This week back to usual.

They are not "wildfires" but deliberate arson.

The lies start right at this point and never end...

I believe  20% of what they are saying. Pollution was bad to begin with The wild fires only exacerbate it It is still bad. It effects the people and the Thai economy as well as tourism. The authorities love to blame but do little do resolve it

Blame it on the boogie

Ah, so it isn't the many forest fires that are being lit in my area.

It isn't the road sides being burnt by government workers all along the highways of my province.

It isn't the acres of sugar cane being burnt even now as I type then.

It isn't the massive sugar factory just down the road with smoke belching from the chimney stack.

It isn't the local taxis and old trucks with the black smoke then?

It isn't the ancient trucks used to transport the burnt sugar can then.

No .............. Oh, that's alright then. BS with a capital B. ????

The smoke in Chiang Mai must be coming from Burma ,

someone else is always to blame.

Windy says our very own special smoke in Chiang Mai is a combination of Burmese and Cambodian smoke, there's no common or garden Burmese smoke alone, we have our very own blend.

Although a closer inspection of the firemap satellite view confirms that all of SE Asia is on fire, big time. https://firms.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/map/#z:6;c:102.7,14.6;d:2020-02-26..2020-02-27

For your understanding. Straight from the OP.

The air quality is so poor even the cornonavirus won't visit!

That's weird.

Since the earth rotates counterclockwise, winds blow from West to east, not the other way around (most of the time).

Wind direction is not exclusively determined by direction of the earths rotation, if you look at the windy map shown earlier you'll see wind currents blow in every direction.

In December I was driving back into Bangkok from Chiangmai.  Over towards the Chachoengsao side there were at least 10 big plumes of smoke going way up into the air.  It looked like a military strike had occurred.  When I drove up to Chiangmai before that in Lampang there were fires in every direction.

Absolutely impossible. Are we expected to believe that pollution can get blown into Thailand in the opposite direction of the ”trade winds”. These winds seamen have used ever since ships took to water. Nation’s all over the world have built their economies upon these “Trade Winds”. Obviously the writer of this fake news has very little knowledge of .

My location ... 30 Km inland from Pattaya

The Air Quality is really bad when the wind direction is North East / East

When the wind is South Westerly the Air is reasonably good.

About a Month back a NASA Satellite mapped 150 " Hot Spots " in Thailand .. Fires. The same satellite on the same pass over mapped 960 " Hot Spots " in Cambodia.

The statement from NASA that went along with these observations said that the fires in Cambodia were from mainly Chinese Owned Farming, and the burning of Corn fields.

By default, the same argument could then be used that Thailand's own burning smog would be interfering with the next country ?

nobody thinks about all the pesticides (dangerous) that are being burnt along

cancer anyone?

Coronavirus attacks the respitory system as does the horrendous air pollution from the crop burning in Thailand. Seems unlikely that unhealthy levels of PM 2.5 particulates would be helpful. But no worries everything is under control.????

True! This should in fact be considered an act of war!????

BTW- stroke is the leading cause of death in Thailand (10.7%), followed by ischemic heart disease (7.8%) Average life span just over 70. Long term expats should plan accordingly. ☠️
