The Office of the Vocational Education Commission (VEC) has asked vocational schools nationwide to produce more face masks and hand gels to ease supply shortage in the market, said Narong Pawponsong, secretary of the commission.

The Education Minister, Nataphol Teepsuwan, recently assigned VEC to produce more face masks to tackle the twin problem of Covid-19 and PM2.5 dust pollution in Thailand.

“ VEC has asked vocational schools with readiness to produce an additional 50,000 to 100,000 masks to meet demand nationwide” he said.

“The budget distributed to the schools can sustain a rise in production volume . Further increase in production capacity is possible with a larger budget” he added.

In addition to face masks, the minister has asked vocational schools to produce hand gels for distribution to the communities, as the products have also been in short supply.

“A problem found in the production of face mask was the scarcity of filtering materials," the secretary said, adding “ The VEC and the schools have held talks with the producers on securing sufficient material supply".

Students participating in the production of face masks and hand gels are hired at Bt25 per hour, he said.
