BANGKOK (NNT) - To deal with a rise in demand for consumer products, expected if Thailand enters the likely third phase of the country’s response to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Somkid Jatusripitak, who is in charge of economic affairs, today had a meeting with major product manufacturers and modern trading outlets to make sure that there would be no shortage of products.

The meeting was attended by representatives of major manufacturers and modern trade outlets, such as the Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group, Saha Pathanapibul (SPC), Berli Jucker (BJC), Unilever Thailand, Big C and Tesco Lotus. Producers of face masks and alcohol-based hand sanitizers and members of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) and the Thai Chamber of Commerce also joined the discussion.

Deputy Prime Minister Somkid said after the meeting that all manufacturers had assured him of an adequate supply of consumer goods. The manufacturers are currently producing 12.9 million liters of drinking water per month, and they can increase production by 28 percent.

They can produce 10 million packets of instant noodles a day, and the production capacity can be raised to 15 million packets. About 22,000 tons of canned fish are produced each month. The manufacturers say they are able to double their production capacity if required. He assured the public that there will be no shortage of products.

The government has provided financial support to help manufacturers produce 10 million face masks. They will be given to the people free of charge. The manufacturers will take two months to produce them. About 200,000 to 300,000 masks will be distributed to the public 14 days from now.

Dr. Somkid said the government will launch more remedial measures to reduce the impact of COVID-19 on entrepreneurs. He urged them to delay any decision to lay off their workers, allowing them to earn at least two months of income. Thereby, not having an adverse impact on production capacity and consumers’ purchasing power.

Of course Somkid is going to say no shortages, if he said some things are going to be in short supply, that will encourage people to panic buy.

if his mouth moved when he said it, he is lying

Can they ask the chickens to produce more eggs and pigs produce more bacon.

I was in Big C yesterday and both were completely sold out. I can understand eggs, but I was surprised bacon was sold out. Before anyone asks - no I wasn't going to make breakfast.

Oh toilet paper and frozen meals were basically sold out too.

There were plenty of noodles (but not Mama) and a few cans of tuna. I never eat tinned fish but some of the shelves in that area were empty

It doesn't surprise me. The outbreak of swine fever in Asia has made pork products both more expensive and less available

The situation on the ground tells us otherwise. There are plenty of empty shelves in stores.
