Thailand: 'home to outstanding businesses'

Over the past four decades Thailand has made remarkable progress in social and economic development, moving from a low to upper income country in less than a generation. And this has translated into strong growth for Thai equities. Over 20 years to 29 May 2020, the Stock Exchange of Thailand made a total return of 1,270 per cent or 14 per cent a year. By contrast, over same period the FTSE All-Share index made a total return of 124 per cent, or 4 per cent a year.

But Thailand’s economy has been hit by the coronavirus outbreak. In particular, travel curbs on foreign arrivals and the closure of pubs and sports stadiums will have a negative effect on the economy and corporate earnings in the near term.

Orsen Karnburisudthi, manager of Aberdeen New Thai Investment Trust (ANW), says that the country’s fundamentals prior to the Covid-19 outbreak were robust. He adds: “Thailand is home to some outstanding businesses, which provide goods and services both domestically and overseas. When the economy does recover, key beneficiaries will include exporters, consumer companies and services sectors, such as healthcare and, eventually, tourism.

555555555555555, I know of one business that employs over 100 thais and has international sales that is in an uneasy situation because after doing everything required by the govt to expand they were refused because they would not pay the govt official/s in Bangkok a few million baht demanded before  approval would be given  despite all the local govt agencies and officials already approving it. When graft/corruption from govt officials  stops businesses from expanding how in the hell can anyone say Thailand is home to outstanding businesses, graft and corruption are the outstanding businesses in Thailand, its what the country runs on

^^^ No clue about Thai businesses ^^^

The article says "Thailand is home to some outstanding businesses" denying that is lack of knowledge.

I know this massage shop that runs a outstanding business.

I do like a good laugh in the morning, this report provided it today.

It's a lot easier to have an outstanding business, with monopolies,

restrict competition  from foreign companies.

Outstanding  or  upstanding????

"Home to outstanding businesses". Mind to mention a specific one?

All Thai businesses are leveraged by foreign presence, investments and tourism. In fact, look at the picture. They could not find any business to feature in the article other than the Thai temple (tourism).
