Money changers robbed by Chinese man in Sihanoukville

Featured Replies

Military police in Preah Sihanouk province on Sunday arrested one of two Chinese nationals accused of robbing $7,300 from two Cambodian money changers in Sihanoukville. Major Sok Sameth, the deputy commander of  Sihanoukville military police, identified the suspect as Wang Jing Zhong, 49, a casino staff working with a Chinese-owned casino in the city.

The two Cambodian victims were identified as Sok Iv, 32 and his wife Soy Lina, 24; both money changers at Phsar Loeu Market living in Buon commune. Maj Sameth added that at about 9am on Sunday, the victims travelled by motorbike towards Phsar Loeu Market carrying about $7,300 with them.

On route, two unidentified Chinese men on a motorbike followed and accosted them before making off  with the bag of money. “The suspects rode a motorbike and followed the victims’ motorbike and stopped them. The pillion rider, at knifepoint, snatched the bag containing the money from the woman and he and his accomplice drove off,” Maj Sameth told Khmer Times yesterday.

I'm hoping!

One thing I never understood is the money changers in Cambo put the money in a big fish tank type of thing right there under the counter so it can be seen from the street.  Not smart, eh?

Not only the money lenders, many other Khmer local business people as well. Here in Siem Reap, the lady who runs the "street food" stall outside my apartment, stuffs her takings into a plastic bag tied to a metal support with a piece of string, my local pharmacist puts the money for my diabetes medication into a wooden drawer with no compartments - he has to fumble with all the notes to find the right change!!

Those Chinese robbers ....  chinese nationals are known money launderers and shifty casino operators and gamblers.

Lock em up Major.
