Aussie freed from Cambodian jail on appeal

Featured Replies

Former Catholic school teacher Garry Mulroy has flown out of Phnom Penh, protesting his conviction for indecent assault against children and alleging he was the victim of an extortion racket.

Mulroy had spent the past week in a safe house in the Cambodian capital amid fears for his safety after he was released from prison in Siem Reap, in the northwest, where he was serving a two-year prison term for assaulting six boys.

He was initially charged with engaging in child prostitution, which carries a 15-year term.

Sounds a bit odd .........

"The former Catholic school teacher from Lismore was found guilty of indecent assault, although all the boys testified he had never touched them and the prosecution did not give details of the alleged assaults."

I wouldn't take a teaching job thesedays if it paid $1m a year.....

After living in Cambodia for 2 1/2 years I can say child molestation is way too common. In fact, things I found outrageous I was told were "cultural". However, NGOs can get out of hand. There's a well-known story of a western father being seriously harassed by the police for playing soccer with his own son in front of the Grand Palace because of a complaint made by some NGO workers. It's complicated. Personally, as a humble female English teacher, I wasn't a fan of many of the rich, entitled, bigoted NGO workers I knew. There were, however, some good ones. As for the police, well, you know the story...

At least he knows what he is accused of doing.

Normally they will not inform the victim.

i call this harassment gang stalking.

it is very common in both Cambodia and Thailand.

It is well funded by the American Christians and has little to do with child abuse

rather it is to do with money.

I am very curious about your lines above. Can you please explain a bit more. Thanks.

It would probably improve the level of discussion if people actually read the story.

an independent report commissioned by the defence outlined a litany of miscarriages of justice and rivalries between NGOs that led to his arrest.
