BANGKOK (NNT) - An advisor to the Prime Minister, Peerapan Saleerattavipak, as chairman of the special committee studying approaches to constitutional amendments, has given a lecture on “Constitutional Amendment” ahead of a sitting of Parliament to discuss the matter this November 17-18.

In his speech, Peerapan acknowledged that a segment of the population sees the constitution as removed from the people and purely a political matter, remarking that the importance of the constitution is up to each individual’s perception. He said an effort must be made to create an understanding that the charter is an integral part of Thai society.

The advisor noted his personal sentiment that charters should not be simply copied from other sources; they should be derived from a nation’s culture and traditions.

He continued by saying that the constitution should not be written from a solely political standpoint but should serve as a manual for citizens, guiding their daily lives and interactions with the state. He voiced disagreement with deriving future charters from the 1932 edition, saying any new versions should serve as the ultimate law of the country and address actual issues being faced.

Peerapan elaborated that Article 256 is being tabled during the upcoming Parliament session, giving his opinion that if the article is altered to allow a Constitution Drafting Committee to be formed, it should include members of the public and allow them to outline issues they want to see handled by the state. He suggested issues of public concern be collected and the charter be rewritten to address such concerns as this would allow society to move forward. Nonetheless, he admitted that charter changes may not end political conflict as they are up to individual ideas.

A member of the committee studying constitutional articles slated for amendment, Nikorn Chamnong said the Parliament session this November 17-18 is to consider amending seven articles and may establish more special committees to undertake reviews.

Yeah, the freedom to be harassed and jailed for saying the wrong thing to one's 'betters'.

Is this some kind of joke? Public freedoms, ha, ha, with Prayut, only thing he understands is control.

And that right there is probably the biggest load of drivel I have read all year, congratulations there has been stiff competition from Tat and the Government but advisor Peerapan stole it with this extraordinary example of verbal diarrhoea....

Like the military?

Wow, this guy, who pretty much said nothing of consequence, used the word "freedom".   Have not heard a junta shill use that word ever.  cha cha has never used that word to the best of my knowledge.

The PM changed the charter to suit his own purposes, took freedom of speech away from the public, abolished opposition parties and arrests anyone at will who speaks out against him.

And Thailand's tradition to resolve political differences by coup and abolition of the Charter?

He said a few good words but it isn't reality.  Ordinary Thais have few rights,  hiso & the cronies in parliament are the only ones with rights

One amendment for consideration is the freedom to use water cannons in use again last night ????

Nobody believes the Junta. Time to go.
