Eight deminer dogs trained and ready to be sold to do their duty

Eight deminer dogs will be ready to be sold next year after being bred and trained via the Cambodian Mine Action Centre’s (CMAC) National Dog Centre programme. Heng Ratana, director-general of CMAC, said on Friday that the dogs will: “be purchased by foreign nations as they will have enough skills to support mine clearance.”

Ratana didn’t disclose where those deminer dogs will be sent to or how much they will cost, but he said CMAC has a plan to develop the National Dog Centre to train dogs in different skills for security purposes and export them. “CMAC has the ambition to develop the National Dog Centre which is capable to breed, train and provide a set of detection dogs in all fields namely explosive detection, security, wildlife tracking and drug-sniffing,” he said.

CMAC experts consider conditions of topography, sociology and specific demands in terms of dog operational deployments, he added. In late November, CMAC welcomed a new generation of deminer dogs. Seven puppies were delivered on November 28. In April, ten other puppies were delivered and now CMAC’s experts are training them.

 For reference from "Minesweepers"

  • The areas most affected by land mines include: Egypt (23 million, mostly in border regions); Angola (9-15 million); Iran (16 million); Afghanistan (about 10 million); Iraq (10 million); China (10 million); Cambodia (up to 10 million); Mozambique (about 2 million); Bosnia (2-3 million); Croatia (2 million); Somalia (up to 2 million in the North); Eritrea (1 million); and Sudan (1 million). Egypt, Angola, and Iran account for more than 85 per cent of the total number of mine-related casualties in the world each year.
