We've just heard that the EU medicine regulator's review of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine has concluded that "unusual blood clots with low blood platelets should be listed as very rare side effects".

 

"The reported combination of blood clots and low blood platelets is very rare, and the overall benefits of the vaccine in preventing Covid-19 outweigh the risks of side effects," the European Medicines Agency (EMA) said.

 

Most of the cases reported had occurred in women under 60 years of age within two weeks of vaccination.

The regulator said that one plausible explanation for the combination of blood clots and low blood platelets was an "immune response, leading to a condition similar to one seen sometimes in patients treated with heparin (heparin induced thrombocytopenia, HIT)".

I feel that people don't care, and rightly, as before, before any vax came.

Nobody has choice which vax they will have. For thai it's a dream to have any one.

For foreigners it's even further prospect

Of course they do. It was only ever a 'thing' because it is a UK firm. Whatever happened to the Pfizer deaths in Norway? Grab a group of people that take any drug (nor not) and there will be deaths. Even if there were a direct link where a potentially one in a million died as a result of having AZ, that would be amazing odds against the thousands upon thousands saved. Thing for Europe is, it is going through a 3rd wave and has a massive shortfall of vaccines together with a scared populace that won't take this thing now because of all the FUD. Lots of preventable deaths coming.

The issue is important and worrying but needs to be kept in perspective.  This is the most important global weapon we have against covid19, and it's benefit has been immense in the UK, already preventing thousands of needless deaths in over 60's.  

 

I hope the cause can be found so that the vaccine can be tweaked- it seems to be something to do with anti- platelet antibodies being triggered in a very small minority of people.  JJ vaccine may be implicated too, and that is also a big gun for global vaccination.
