Just bought an old Honda dream (2539) and need to get the gas gauge fixed. The dash itself looks fine but the needle's stuck at a half tank. Does anyone know how complicated this is to fix and how much(ish) it would cost at a local repair shop?

Does the odometer still work? If so just use that.

Fill up the tank, put a half litre container of petrol/gas under the seat or hang the from the hook. 

Note "mileage" before and after. Run bike until it runs out of fuel. Then you will know the range per tankful and can act accordingly. 

 

Sadly though as it is 15 years old the speedo probably gave up long ago.

In the fuel tank there is a float connected to a sending unit.

This assembly will likely need to be purchased complete.

If it is the same as a newer model Dream, good to go.

If not, chances are that a 25 year old part will be hard to locate.

As in any troubleshooting - look for the easy things first i.e. broken wire, etc

Altho this sounds like the float is stuck and/or the sending unit has gone south.

Great this answers it, thanks all. Will have shop do it. And yes, odo ticks though it's not accurate — using that for now.

First, you can change the fuel level sensor.

The original sensor for Honda Dream has a crazy price -37080-KFM-900 / UNIT SET FUEL DREAM ฿ 1.400
Come to the parts store and show this number and say "COPY", the cost of a non-original part is 80-110 THB and works great. You need to remove the right body cover for replacement.
If the problem is not resolved:
37200-KFM-901 SPEEDOMETER ASSY DREAM ฿ 2.290 +/- or maybe 37200-GBG-T10 for model with indication of 4 gears.
37200-GN5-731 SPEEDOMETER ASSY DREAM for neutral and top gear indication only.
 The cost of the non-original SPEEDOMETER ASSY DREAM part is 500-700 THB, but it's may work not stable.
Working time is 20-30 minutes only.
