Danny Tommo charged as Channel crisis takes another turn

Danny Tommo has gone from filming himself slashing a Channel dinghy to facing criminal charges after police investigated the incident.

Daniel Thomas, 37, has been charged with criminal damage and with allegedly failing to disclose the PIN to his phone after receiving a police notice. He has been remanded in custody and is due before Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court.

Hampshire Police said the criminal damage allegation involved a boat on which an emergency responder was present. The CPS said there was sufficient evidence to prosecute, while stressing that the charges are not a finding of guilt.

THE BIGGER CHANNEL PICTURE

But the arrest comes as the Channel story has suddenly become much bigger than one controversial activist and one damaged dinghy.

On Wednesday, 781 people arrived in Britain in 10 small boats — the highest number recorded on a single day so far this year.

The latest figures took provisional Channel arrivals for 2026 to 18,565, although that remained below the equivalent figure at the same point in both 2025 and 2024.

TWO BOATS GET THROUGH

The numbers came amid renewed questions about border enforcement after two boats reached the British coast without being intercepted on consecutive days.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood ordered an urgent review by Border Security Command and said the failure to intercept the vessels was “not acceptable”.

THE 33-HOUR CROSSING

Meanwhile, the boat that sparked furious scenes in Gosport did not even arrive there.

The 51 people aboard were eventually taken to Dover after spending more than 33 hours at sea. The French coastguard said they had been in precarious conditions and had refused assistance while attempting to reach Britain.

The drama on shore produced another part of the story, with six people arrested during the Gosport protest and three subsequently charged with offences including assaulting emergency workers.

PROTESTS AND POLICE

That means the authorities are now dealing with several fronts at once — the boats themselves, people attempting to intercept or protest against them, and growing concern over vessels reaching the British coast undetected.

On Thursday evening, several hundred people also gathered outside a police investigation centre in Basingstoke after Thomas's arrest, with supporters chanting “Free DT”.

A NEW PHASE?

Tommo's arrest therefore lands at an awkward moment for the Government.

The Channel crossings are down on some comparable periods, but the latest daily figure, the undetected landings and the increasingly confrontational scenes around migrant arrivals have put the issue firmly back in the headlines.

And now the man who turned a migrant dinghy into a political stunt is facing a court hearing of his own.

They are nearly all arrested and charged......drones capture their image "driving" the boats and they are promptly arrested on arrival......none are from the smugglers gangs.....they are conned, offered free passage or forced into being the pilot.

San Giorgi, 39, was acquitted at Southwark Crown Court on Monday afternoon following a trial, a court official said.

During the trial, he told a jury he did not believe he had done anything criminal because he was sending a message to Parliament

The key part of this whole story is: San Giorgi, 39, was acquitted at Southwark Crown Court on Monday afternoon following a trial, a court official said.

Now the fact that you don't like it is irrelevant, he was charged, he went to Court, he was ACQUITTED, end of story.

If some guy gets acquitted of Criminal Damage to a statue of Winston Churchill, then some guy should be acquitted of Criminal Damage to a dinghy that was being used to bring illegals to the UK

He didn't damage the statue.....he dirtied it with a thin layer of paint and it remained structral intact without needing repair or replacement.

The Chavscum who slashed the dinghy will not be jailed for damage.......he will be jailed for endangering life at sea.

Which would have needed cleaning at taxpayers expense, hence the criminal damage charge authorised by the CPS.

The level of damage caused, is pretty irrelevant.
