Narathiwat - A policeman was killed and robbed of M-16 assault rifle by eight Muslim insurgents at a fresh market in this southern border province Thursday morning.

Police Senior Sgt-Maj Suriya Malaimarn, 51, was shot and killed by eight insurgents while he was driving his pick-up truck slowly through the market road in Tambon Rusoh of Rusoh district at 7:20 am.

Suriya was transporting foods for his wife to sell at the market in front of a railway station when the eight insurgents surrounded his truck and opened fire at him with pistols.

Suriya was hit by over 10 bullets.

The insurgents then took his M-16 rifle and fled the scene on four motorcycles.
