Chiang Rai dams take toll on wildlife, farmers

Featured Replies

The Dams in China on the Mekong River have disturbed the traditional flow of the river to downstream areas, affecting farming lands as the river water would cause much more frequent floods during the dry season.

Villagers and farmers in Chiang Khong in the Chiang Rai Province, Thailand have expressed their dismay over the changes to the nature of the river, adding that it has become much more difficult for them to deal with the fluctuating nature of the river.

They reported many cases whereby the river would eat their crops and containers, they said farmers are left to deal with their losses.

Moreover, environmentalists said that the dry season is crucial for animals and birds to reproduce as the water would recede under normal circumstances.

The dams, however, would affect this process, by releasing water into the river in the dry season, disrupting the circle and affecting the wildlife.

Water fluctuation in the Mekong River also causes erosion of river banks.

The Thai government has to spend US$3.5 million per kilometer to build dikes to fix the issue.

You will only get water once the Chinese deem they have enough, or too much for their own use. Nothing to be done about it.

They could even use it as a weapon in future. "Don't upset us or we will shut off your water supply."

CCP don't care & the Thai government will not or cannot stand up to China - the end result is inevitable ........

These comments reveal the depth of obsessionality among some about China. Yes, China has built dams on the Mekong that are ecologically disastrous. But how is it the CCP's fault that Thailand has done the same?

"Chiang Rai dams take toll on wildlife, farmers"

Great headline. Thailand's ally is pretty thin skinned, might be upset if labeled 'Chinese dams on the Mekong'. Better call them "Chiang Rai dams".

Lots of dams in Mekong from China , Thailand, Laos, Cambodja and i thought even Vietnam.

The low water supply is now effective already some years.

I bet China is leading the water away to other parts of China, for agriculture and so on.

They already did with some major cities in the east of China to get water everywhere.

Big pipes leading to and from cities.

So the water of the Mekong they also use it for own gain and Mekong and environment is changed.

Also, probably the production of electricity of the many dams down the Mekong.

They dont care.

If only durians could float upstream.......
